Sorry, there won’t be a Retina MacBook Air this Thursday

Last week we reported on how new, slimmer 12-inch Retina MacBook Airs have supposedly entered production, set to arrive in iPhone-inspired silver, gold and space gray color options.

With that being the case, some people have been asking whether we’re going to see the MacBook refresh at this Thursday’s Apple event.

According to Re/code, the answer to that question is a resounding “no.” Citing people familiar with Apple’s plans, the new ultralight notebooks won’t be seen at the company’s forthcoming media event — which will instead focus on new iPads, OS X Yosemite and Retina iMacs.

One reason for Apple’s reluctance to debut the upgraded laptop could be a desire to establish a clear boundary between its MacBook Air and iPad product lines. Releasing the two together could result in cannibalization of sales for both devices.

The slimmer design of the thinner Retina MacBook Air is apparently the result of eliminating the fan assembly, which is part of the reason the current Air is thicker on one end than the other. Apple might also save space within the new MacBook Air chassis by eliminating the physical clicking mechanism in the trackpad.

Looks like we’re going to have to wait until 2015 to find out, though.
