Joining Belkin’s armada of WeMo home-automation devices today is the WeMo Insight Switch. Like the plain-vanilla WeMo Switch, the Insight Switch will let you power on or off whatever is connected to its outlet via the WeMo iOS or Android app. Unlike the regular Switch, the Insight lets you also see exactly how much money you’er spending on juice, and adds more control flexibility.
The timers are pretty cool: You can plug a light into the Insight Switch and set a schedule to switch it on and off at a particular time. Or you can set it to switch on at sunset and off at sunrise and the app will keep it synced with local sunrise/sunset times.
And just like the Switch, the Insight Switch works with IFTTT, a system that uses simple language and popular services (Foursquare, Facebook, email servers) to create sets of instructions.
The original Belkin Insight simply plugged into an outlet and displayed how much juice was flowing though it — no wifi connectivity or any control razzmatazz. Considering how useful we found it, the Insight version of the WeMo Switch seems like a steal over the regular WeMo Switch, which is only $10 cheaper.
