Motorola’s “iLost” Anti-Apple Ad Points Out The Painful Truth About iOS 6 Maps [Mapgate]

Companies like Google and Samsung aren’t exactly known for making the best anti-Apple propaganda, but the latest attack ad from Motorola has a particularly painful amount of truth to it. Everyone knows that Apple’s Maps app in iOS 6 sucks right now, and competitors are obviously going to latch onto any negative Apple press they can. That’s why Motorola’s ad says that the “DROID RAZRM M” (serious name) promises to not get you “iLost.”

While most of these Android ads have been pathetic attempts at calling out the iPhone’s flaws, I can’t really fault Motorola (who is owned by Google) for going with the Maps angle. It’s no surprise that none of the recent iPhone 5 ads mention Maps at all. If Apple doesn’t fix the negative inertia its generated with Maps in iOS 6, it could have a serious PR problem on its hands.

To Apple’s credit, iOS 6 Maps is being compared to Google Maps, a decade-old, matured platform that Google has invested thousands upon thousands of man hours into. Apple’s Maps will get there, it’s just going to take a little time.

Still wouldn’t change my iphone for nothing

I used the map app on turn-by-turn all weekend and it was flawless. I didn’t always agree with the routing, but it was perfect. I also checked a number of foreign and domestic cities and neighborhoods I am very familiar with and they were rendered fine, a few missing Starbucks locations and some places on the wrong side of the street. The 3D satellite photos look a little weird when bridges are rendered, but I wouldn’t be navigating by 3D satellite photos to begin with. Overall, not perfect but good enough for me.

If someone chooses not buy a phone over a not as great maps app is retarded. IPhone 5 is hands down the best iPhone out there. It’s beautiful and amazing!

Isn’t it funny that they use an incorrect address to search though, should it not be Manhattan not NY they search for…? In which case i believe Maps in IOS6 gives the correct map…!

And if they are gonna take that route didn’t Google lose an entire city in Florida 3 times, and almost start a war by there bad mapping in 2010… Haha

It’s sad when a company can’t say enough good things about their own products, and instead have to bash someone else’s – justified or not. Apple did it with “the PC,” of course (mainly Windows, actually), so they’ve got some karma loaded up for this. But it’d be nicer to see Motorola doing something innovative, and bragging about it. I mean… one can still use Google Maps on the iPhone, and one presumes a native iOS app is coming, so this isn’t exactly a long-lasting advantage.

No matter what innovation Motorola or Google comes up with, it will never be treated by the media with the reverence and awe that anything apple comes up with, regardless if its an actual innovation or not. Sadly the way they get any kind of press is by bashing apple. Like this blog post for example.

I love how everyone not using iPhones thinks that Maps makes the whole phone a flop. We had other GPS apps for turnbyturn anyway.. why? because the iphones prior didn’t HAVE turn by turn… so if we need it we already have it. MotionXDrive and Mapquest have great apps.

This shouldn’t ever stop someone from getting an iphone, nor should it boost Android sales.

take a little time??? I will take at least a year to make minor improvement and two years to make them decent!!! Apple should never force they user’s to used something that’s so bed… If i were Google i would let them boil in their own sauce…

Motorola bases their product ad, not on how their product competes with the iPhone, but on a small mapping app (that has some early flaws) that users are not forced to use, and there are plenty of alternative mapping apps.

This really shows how Motorola has nothing to show to compete with the iPhone 5 itself.

  • volodoscope

Wow, look at Motorola photoshopping that phone. That’s not how small the phone is. False advertisement is amusing.

Motorola…. still hurt feelings because of that PowerPC thing? Moto is like like Apple’s ex-GF. She just won’t go away.

iLost is an iLie. That part of 15th is in fact called Marlborough Road. Just like Route 66 within the LA city limits is called Santa Monica Blvd and so on.

The iPhone found it and under the proper name.

Won’t be shocked if they get slapped with a False Advertising claim

And? Google has had like 12 years and they still aren’t perfect
