iPhone Case Packs Vestigial USB Thumb Drive

Possibly pointless but plainly pretty.

What if I told you there was a case that adds up to 16GB storage to your iPhone? And further, that this case costs just $50. You’d be pretty interested, right? Well, it’s kind of true. You can indeed buy a 16GB case, but sadly that memory can’t actually be used with the iPhone.

The cases are from Ego, and they’re pretty stock bumper/skin cases, with one difference: there’s a slot into which you can slide and carry a USB thumb drive. The drives come in 4GB ($35), 8GB ($40) and 16GB ($50) sizes, and can be had in a range of pick’n’mix colors to either match or clash with the cases.

What’s the point? Well, if you’re The Lady’s uncle, you carry around about five USB sticks on your keyring at all times, so consolidation would be one use-case. Another is for photos and video — If you keep iOS-compatible pictures and movies inside a folder called “DCIM” at the root level of the drive, you can import them using the camera connection kit.

This is handy for both grabbing pics from a friend with a computer, or for loading up with extra movies to be deleted from the phone once watched. Pro tip — CineXPlayer can import movies from your Camera Roll.

Whether this is useful to you depends on whether you ever use USB sticks. Dropbox has largely made this pointless to me, but I shall certainly be pointing it out to The Lady’s uncle. When he finally buys an iPhone, that is.
