Microsoft Tries To Discredit iWork As Competition, But Ends Up Looking Desperate

By

Apple has turned software pricing on its head, and Microsoft isn't happy about it.
Apple has turned software pricing on its head, and Microsoft isn't happy about it.

Yesterday Apple announced that all of its consumer software, including OS X Mavericks, is now free. Customers who buy Apple’s hardware will have full access to the completely new versions of iLife and iWork at no additional cost. It’s a bold move that The New York Times called a direct attack on Microsoft Office.

The decision to make iWork free wasn’t Apple’s only jab at Microsoft during yesterday’s keynote, and now the Redmond giant has gone on the defensive.

Microsoft Takes Aim At The iPhone 5c With Its Own Bad Parody Video [Update]

Update: Microsoft got the message that the video sucks, and it has been pulled.

The Apple parody video fad has been a bit played out the past couple years, but Microsoft thinks its got the comedic chops to take on the iPhone 5c and convince you to switch over to its struggling line of Windows Phones. The company’s WindowsPhone channel on YouTube just released a parody video depicting two stumped iPhone designers who just sit around a conference room table tossing out different color ideas to a pensive Tim Cook.

You would think a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft could afford some better video production, or at least have the cash to hire a decent writer, but instead we’re left with leprechaun jokes and a plastic fork.

Want an iPhone 5c parody video that’s actually funny? Our pal John Elerick and his crew of Apple bashers are back this year with two banned iPhone promo videos for the iPhone 5c and 5s. Get your laughs in after the jump:

This week’s must-have games roundup is by far one of our best yet; it’s filled with five awesome titles that you won’t want to miss. Three of those titles are classic games reborn on iOS, including Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — my personal favorite, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, and Mutant Mudds.

We also have Gameloft’s incredible new first-person shooter, Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, and Minigore 2: Zombies, another terrific dual-stick shooter from Mountain Sheep.

Update Takes iPad GarageBand From Bread and Butter To Jam [Review]

The instruments browser offers a range of keyboards, guitars, basses, amps and effects, and a sampler.

The recently-updated version of GarageBand — Apple’s popular music-making app for the iPad — finally turns it into a serious tool for bands rather than something limited to solo artists and their session collaborators. With a shared connection, up to four band members can play or jam to a piece of music, be it a pop song or a classical overture. For the first time, it brings live performance to the iPad app.

Microsoft screen sings the praises of Mac.

Department store Saks Fifth Avenue is running a Christmas display in New York City, sponsored in part by Microsoft, where well-wishers can send messages from Twitter to the store window.

In a rather unsurprising, but still entertaining, turn of events a lot of those people express the holiday spirit with “Bah Microsoft!” which then pops up on the Windows screen.

A few recent ones:

midy No need for a black and blue holiday. Black Friday is coming, why would you want a blue screen of death? Get a Mac.

RGNeighbour Friends don’t let friends buy PC’s. GET A MAC!

If you want to get in on the holiday fun, read the shenanigans or send your tweet try this:  #HolidayWindows .

UPDATE: The GNU/free software folks have also jumped on the bandwagon:

kennydude #holidaywindows Get Ubuntu, it’s free and easy-to-use. It’s also secure, customizable and does more than Windows. By @fernandovalente

rodrigoy Very happy with my Linux: No locks-up, no blue screen, no anti-virus, no malwares, no bullshit…

The interesting thing — with all the obscenities and potentially obnoxious other stuff that could’ve come up that Microsoft should’ve worried about, they’re getting a playful public bashing, which they also might have predicted…

‘SNL’ Uses Jailbroken iPhone as Apple Closes TIFF Exploit

By

I love the NBC and Apple feud so much. Sometimes, the companies overtly bash each other. For every other moment, there’s fun speculation. Take for instance, the latest volley, which likely has nothing to do with the epic rumble between Jeff Zucker and Steve Jobs, but it’s fun to pretend otherwise. Here’s the set-up: NBC’s Saturday Night Live had a sketch featuring an iPhone that Gizmodo believes to have the illicit installer app that graces all jailbroken iPhones — and then, today, Apple issues iPhone firmware 1.1.2 on UK iPhones, which closes the exploit that enables the current group of jailbreaks. Coincidence? Or distant shots in a hundred-years war?

(No further word on features for 1.1.2. Best not to install for now.)
