Save space with a wall charger that’s also a USB/HDMI hub [Review] ★★★★☆

AVerMedia Elite Go GC313Pro review★★★★☆
Don’t carry a separate wall charger and hub when the AVerMedia Elite Go GC313Pro is both.

Plug the AVerMedia Elite Go GC313Pro into a wall socket to charge your Mac or iPad, and then (surprise!) plug an HDMI monitor and USB accessories into it, too. It’s both a charger and a hub in one package, handy for any traveler. Plus, it can charge three devices at once — also great for travelers.

As a bonus feature, the gizmo is also a video capture card. But (spoiler alert) how useful this is for Apple users is questionable.

I tested the various functions of the 4-in-1 charging hub and came away impressed… mostly.

Gorgeous workstation goes big on premium audio gear [Setups]

WiiM Ultra
It's a beautiful computer setup full of beautiful audio gear.
Photo: [email protected]

A physically beautiful computer setup is a wonder to behold. And one loaded with primo audio gear truly turns me green with envy. So today’s PC setup with desktop and laptop machines got my attention both for its aesthetic and the fact that it sports a raft of cool components. They include a very useful item I’ve never seen before: a WiiM Ultra Music Streamer and Digital Preamp.

Beelink Mini PC
That's an LG smart TV as a main display. To the right of it is a converted iPad HDMI display and a Beelink Mini PC in a 3D-printed housing with a 7-inch touchscreen.

When does a computer setup have everything? Never, really. Each one is a perpetual work in progress. But today’s fine example claims to have everything and it actually comes pretty close in some ways. It features MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Beelink Mini PC with external touchscreen, gaming PC, big smart TV external display and an original iPad used as an HDMI display. And the other gaming-centric peripherals and knickknacks in the picture are pretty cool, too.

Should you mount speakers sideways on stands? [Setups]

Yamaha studio monitor - pair
Yamaha HS7 studio monitor speakers far outstrip the small speaker inside a Mac mini.

Today’s Mac mini setup really pumps up the clear audio with Yamaha studio monitor speakers, suitable for the user’s music production. They mount the speakers on stands, which is great. But they mount them sideways, which is … odd. And despite having those, they love their HomePod mini for most uses.

Dio Node AirPlay speakers fill your home with sound [Review] ★★★★

Dio Node AirPlay speaker★★★★
Dio Node: Big sound in a small package.
Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac

Dio Node speakers connect to your Wi-Fi network and let you easily stream music, podcasts and more from your iPhone or Mac. Thanks to support for AirPlay, virtually any audio on the device can stream to one or more of these speakers.

I put an array of Node speakers to the test in my house. They invite an immediate comparison to HomePod mini, given the features and price, so I put them up against Apple’s smart speaker, too.

Dive into the mysterious depths of The Gorge on Apple TV+
Discover ‘the world’s most dangerous secret’ in The Gorge on Apple TV+ in 2025.
Graphic: Apple TV+

The gorge is the door to Hell.” That’s all we learn about it from the trailer for the Apple TV+ thriller of the same name coming in February. Two agents tasked with protecting the world from whatever’s hidden in the depths are strictly forbidden to go in — but you know they’re going in. For those eager to see how the film is being received, you can check out The Gorge reviews for early impressions.

The upcoming film stars Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver.

Update: The Gorge premiered on Apple TV+ on Friday, so it’s ready to watch for Valentine’s Day.

Mac mini mounted on back of monitor
You can see this user works with an iPad. But where's the Mac mini?
Photo: [email protected]

It’s a fun game for a Friday: Find the Mac mini in today’s featured setup photo, above. Or maybe it’s not so fun, because you’re doomed to failure. It’s not visible because the user mounted it on the back of his 5K Samsung ViewFinity S9 external monitor (which just happens to look just like its ultimate foe, Apple’s 5K Studio Display).

“It’s interesting to see how minimalist every Mac user seems to go with their setups,” noted a commenter. So our user quipped, “Apple store energy, hehe.”

Why every cord-cutter needs a Tablo [Review] ★★★★☆

Original photo of Nuvyyo Tablo TV DVR (4th Gen) to illustrate our review★★★★☆
Stop missing out on local TV with an affordable Tablo over-the-air DVR with antenna.
Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac

Nuvyyo’s Tablo picks up local TV broadcasts and lets you watch or record them on your TV, phone or tablet. As you’ll see in this Tablo TV review, it’s a brilliant solution for cord-cutters who lost access to CBS, ABC, etc., when they dropped their expensive cable subscriptions.

The device costs less than $100, with no subscriptions required and no hidden fees. For this review, I tested the latest Nuvyyo Tablo with my Apple devices and found the over-the-air DVR to be darn good, if not perfect.
