Apple decides it will cough up for ‘Shot on iPhone’ photos

Apple has decided that it will pay winners of its “Shot on iPhone Challenge” following backlash from artists and creators.

The company plans to use 10 images, which will be showcased on its Instagram channel, on billboards around the world, and in other areas, as part of its newest marketing campaign. Apple originally stated there would be no payment, but it has since changed its mind.

iOS developers didn’t have to wait long for Apple to bust out new software for testing after the company put out iOS 12.1.3 just a few days ago.

The first iOS 12.2 beta was seeded to developers this morning bringing a host of new fixes and under-the-hood improvements. There are also a couple of new features, including support for Apple News for users in Canada for the first time ever.

Apple spent $6.6 million lobbying Congress and other federal officials in 2018, newly released records show. While that’s approximately in line with the $7 million it spent in 2017, it’s considerably less than the amount spent by some of Apple’s FAANG rivals.

During the same period, Facebook spent $12.6 million, Amazon spent $14.2 million, and Google — the biggest lobbyist by far — spent a massive $21 million. That’s an increase on Google’s $18 million spend in 2017.

Right now, Apple is snapping up new TV shows, movies and other video content like a shopping addict on Black Friday.

Its latest deal? Getting a “first look” deal for documentaries created by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries. Imagine has made a wide variety of non-fiction shows and feature-length productions, including The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — the Touring Years, Jay-Z’s Made in America, Katy Perry: Part of Me, and more.

The best way for Apple’s upcoming streaming video service to compete against already established competitors like Netflix is to buy a movie studio, according to an industry analyst.

Apple is reportedly going to introduce its video service in the first half of this year, and the analyst recommends buying Sony Pictures, Lionsgate or another studio to increase its offerings.
