I’ve had iPhones for years, but I’ve never really been keen on using one that wasn’t jailbroken. As much as I love iOS, some of Apple’s decisions always kept my iPhone from working exactly how I wanted it to.

Jailbreaking gave me the ability to sidestep those limitations and make iOS my own. I could experience some of the freedom that Android users have grown to love while retaining the reliability, stability and polish of iOS. While I was frustrated that Apple wasn’t making major changes to improve its platform, I was happy that I could make them myself using unauthorized third-party tweaks.

Then I started using iOS 7, and everything changed.

Apple has regained its lead over Android in the battle for U.S. smartphone marketshare, according to the latest report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

Going by CIRP’s figures, in the final quarter of 2013 iOS eked out a 2 percent advantage over Android — with Apple capturing 48 percent of the market to Google’s 46 percent.

Tesco Mobile has today announced that it is giving all contract customers in the U.K. 4G LTE services at no extra cost. They will continue to pay the same price they’ve been paying for 3G, but they’ll get significantly faster speeds in 4G areas throughout the country.

Apple could open a sapphire glass manufacturing facility in Arizona as early as February, according to recently published correspondence between the company and state regulators.

Analyst Matt Margolis unearthed documents that mention the Mesa plant — described as “Project Cascade” — and note that it would be used to manufacturer “a critical new sub-component” for a future Apple product.

Bug fixes for network provisioning are included for iPhone 5c and 5s models sold in China. Apple recently struck a deal with China Mobile to sell the iPhone on its network, which has the largest subscriber base in the world.

Global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent to reach a record 990 million units in 2013, and Android-powered devices accounted for a whopping 79 percent of them. Despite the lowest growth rate in the platform’s history, Android phones still managed to ship four times the amount of iPhone and Windows Phone devices combined.

Apple has announced its earnings for this past holiday quarter, and the results are a doozy. The company reported $57.6 billion in revenue, which is an all-time record. 51 million iPhones and 26 million iPads were sold, which are both records as well.

This quarter’s results are particularly important for Apple because of all the new hardware it announced before Christmas. The iPhone is obviously selling well, but the iPad’s growth is insane when you consider that Apple only sold 14 million units in Q1 of 2013.
