I love my new MacBook Air, but I’m terrified of it being stolen. I’ve been bitten on this before with a top-of-the-line, 15-inch MacBook Pro that was stolen (as I discovered later, by a drug-addicted friend) a mere two months after I bought it. The new MacBook Air’s an even bigger worry, since it’s light weight and small form factor make it all the more a target for a quick snatch-and-run.

Apple doesn’t have a Mac-centric version of their “Find my iPhone” app, but I’ve been looking into Hidden, an OS X application that hides in the background processes of your Mac and only broadcasts your Mac’s location when you go to the official website and tell it to ping your laptop.

The Mac Edition eGo drive is a good-looking complement to Apple’s new glass-and-aluminum Macs. It’s styled to match Apple’s Mac Pro with a sleek, silver case and a grill front.

It’s available in 1TB and 2TB configurations ($159.99 and $249, respectively), and offers several connectivity options: there are two FireWire 800 ports and one USB 2.0 port. It ships with a FireWire 400-to-800 conversion cable, which makes it compatible with Macs without a FireWire 800 port.

We’re just days from Christmas and with this deal spotlight, you’d better watch out for falling prices. Yes, that’s a pretty corny opening, but you’ll find the savings nothing to laugh at. First up is a new crop of iPad apps with lower prices, including the “Splinter Cell” game. Next is another harvest of iPhone apps, including the musical game “Justin Bieber Revenge.” If that’s not enough, we also have another round of price drops on SEGA games, including “Super Monkey Ball.”

If hardware is more your style, we have an iMac powered by a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor with 27-inch screen for $1,649. For MacBook Air fans, we have a 2.13GHz MBA with 13-inch screen for $1,100.

Yesterday, I packed up almost all of my earthly possessions and allowed a surly, sausage-lipped German and a pleasant Scottish lad to take them all away, to cram them in a shipping container and sail off across the sea.

In that shipment was my 27-inch iMac, my main work machine, and so for the next few months I will be using my 11.6-inch iMac for all of my work and productivity needs. It’s a fine machine for that, but I’m already twitching over the USB port situations… the MacBook Air simply is not a good hub to try to sync three device simultaneously.

I love the look, then, of the Green Wall Charger from VogDuo, a pocketable four-way USB charger that has one awesome perk that competing devices don’t: a timer that ticks down in two hour increments. Once it reaches zero, it cuts the circuit and no further juice is drawn… a cute trick that isn’t just fantastic for maximizing your iPhone’s battery life, but also to maintain a clean eco conscious.

The Green Wall Charger only pumps out five watts per USB port, so a single port isn’t enough to charge an iPad, but VogDuo thought ahead: a Y-connector is provided in the package so you can hook your iPad up to two sockets simultaneously.

Pretty rad. I’d buy this today, if not for the fact it’s not available yet: it won’t make an official debut until CES next month.

We all love Dropbox, right? For two years, it’s allowed us to keep our most important files synced across multiple computers and devices, complete with a generous 2GB freebie limit (easily expandable by recommendations and promotions).

It’s hard to believe that such an awesome service wasn’t even version 1.0, but apparently not: last night, Dropbox rolled out their first whole point release, bringing along a huge slew of improvements including — most importantly — selective folder sync.

Selective Sync allows you to select which folders and files within your Dropbox get shot down to your other computers, which can be determined in each computer’s control panel. This allows you, for example, to save some of your poor MacBook Air’s paltry 64GBs from the sheer bloat of your Dropboxed media collection. Lovely.

There’s more improvements than that, naturally. The 1.0 updates includes hundreds of bug fixes, reduced resource usage (50 percent in memory alone) and some user-friendly interface tweaks.

Google’s Marissa Mayer (and the rest of us plebs) must be disappointed to hear that Steve Jobs has not been awarded Time Magazine’s 2010 “Person of the Year” award. Instead, it was awarded to Mark Zuckerberg, the translucently pale lizard man who created Facebook pictured on above.

Steve didn’t totally get the short shift, though. He was declared one of Time Magazine’s “People Who Matter.”

“With each passing year Steve Jobs and his sleek Apple products not only succeed in impressing the techiest of tech addicts, they also manage to create a whole new batch of gadget enthusiasts,” the magazine noted, pointing to the iPad and the redesign of the MacBook Air as examples.

They also noted that this year, under Jobs’ leadership, Apple became the largest technology company in the world.

This isn’t the first time Jobs has been denied the “Person of the Year” award by a thin margin: in 2009, Jobs was one of the top seven finalists. He’ll make it one of these years.

Although Cupertino never tips its hand ahead of time, past experience indicates you can set your watch (at least by the month) for their product refreshes, so no shock here: it’s now being reported that Apple will launch new MacBook Pros in the first half of 2011, which probably equates to a April 2011 timescale, along with new iMacs, which were last updated back in January.

Judging by the video above, mSpot’s actually got me interested: $3.99 for 40GB of online storage is actually a pretty decent price, especially given the slickness of their web interface. I’m about to move, shipping my iMac over and working entirely on my 64GB MacBook Air for the next month… maybe it wouldn’t be a shabby idea to throw my music collection up on mSpot before I leave.

Apple looks like it will break another record for Mac sales, shipping 4.3 million Macs during the December quarter, according to consumer researchers and financial analysts. This comes on the heels of the previous quarter, which revealed a record 3.89 million Macs.

Despite the apparent record, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster views the NPD sales figures as a “neutral data point” because they mirror Wall Street expectations. However, Munster said the figures show international Mac sales are stronger than domestic demand for the Apple computers, indicating the Cupertino, Calif. company is on track for between 22 percent and 28 percent year-over-year growth.

Steve Jobs has made no bones about being skeptical in regards to multitouch displays on desktop and notebook Macs, observing that multitouch works best when a display is horizontal: anything else just leads to gorilla arm.

Right now, that means that Macs’ multitouch options are limited to accessories like the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, but given the iPad’s success, it’s natural Apple is trying to find a more directly interactive approach to horizontal multitouch, in which the display can convert flush with a lap or a desk when it’s in touch mode.

Now a bevy of new patents have been awarded to Apple, most interestingly in a convertible MacBook-to-iPad-like device, spotted by Patently Apple.
