Apple really is working to integrate Touch ID into future iPhone displays, according to a new report.
The company’s in-screen fingerprint-scanning technology could debut as early as 2020. It is expected work alongside Face ID on flagship handsets, giving users a choice between unlock options.
Apple TV+ could have 26 million paying subs by 2025; 2.6 million currently Photo: Apple
You’ll need a subscription to enjoy to Apple TV+ when it lands later this year, but you may not need to purchase an Apple TV. The new video streaming service is also coming to Samsung Smart TVs.
And it only took an extra five months! Photo: Samsung
Samsung’s long-delayed Galaxy Fold folding smartphone will finally go on sale on September 6. This comes five months after it was originally made available for preorder.
The troubled handset, which has undergone a major redesign, will launch in South Korea this week. it will be followed by select countries including France, Germany, Singapore, U.K., U.S. in the near future.
If the specs for USB4 are familiar, that’s because they’re built on the Thunderbolt 3 standard already in most Macs. Photo: Caldigit
Today’s USB-C hubs include multiple USB-A ports, but can’t add additional USB-C ports. This will change when USB4 gets widely implemented, which just took a big step forward with the specifications for this standard being finalized.
And users should welcome an increase to 40Gbps data transfer speeds, too.

Apple intends to borrow money by issuing corporate bonds. It filed a partial prospectus for these today with the SEC. Though what it intends to spend the money on is a bit of a mystery.
The iPhone maker hasn’t needed to run up any debt since early 2018, when it brought home about $250 billion it had socked away overseas.
Oh look! Another Facebook data leak. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
A Facebook server containing hundreds of millions of users’ phone numbers was left completely exposed to potential attackers, according to a new report.
The data linked each phone number to a user’s unique Facebook ID, potentially exposing personal information that could be used against victims. Some of the records also contained the person’s name, gender and country.
Tim Cook reportedly wants to make Apple TV+ shows aspirational in tone. Photo: Apple
Cupertino’s costly decision to cancel an Apple TV+ series starring Richard Gere due to the show’s darker tone is the latest bit of evidence that Apple wants only family-friendly fare for its upcoming streaming video service.
A diet of uplifting, positive messages is certainly laudable. But that sort of high-minded approach could pose a major challenge for Apple. Should fans be worried?
Here's how much you can make selling certain exploit chains. Photo: Zerodium
One of the biggest buyers of iOS zero-day exploits says the market is flooded with new iPhone bugs due to weakened security components in Safari and iMessage.
Zerodium, which pays $2 million for iOS exploits, recently announced it’s increasing its payout for Android exploits to $2.5 million. iOS used to be the most locked-down mobile operating system, but the company says Android’s security has improved with every new OS release while iOS has been slacking, leading to a glut of new exploits.
Apple has clearly shifted its focus from iOS 13 to version 13.1. Screen capture: Apple
The beta process for iOS 13.1 continues, with the second developer-only beta just going out now.
But there hasn’t been a new iOS 13 beta in two weeks. Apple really seems to have finished work on it, even though it hasn’t been released and isn’t even expected until later this month.
How much space do duplicate files take up on your iPad? In theory, they use no extra storage. Thanks to the design of the Apple File System (APFS) used on iOS and macOS, duplicating a file doesn’t actually create a copy. It just creates a reference that points to the original file on the disk.
But what about File Providers, and iCloud, and all that stuff? I decided to take a deep dive and find out if you can really make a zillion copies of a file with no penalty. The results were, to say the least, confusing.
Apple TV does more than just stream video. It will also be tied into Apple Arcade. Photo: Apple
The first new Apple TV set-top box in two years is reportedly coming soon. The updated tvOS player supposedly will be powered by the same chip that’s in the iPhone XS series, potentially making it a better way to play Apple Arcade games than its predecessors.

Was the Zapper Trap too powerful? Photo: Epic Games
Epic Games removed Fortnite’s brand new Zapper Trap less than 24 hours after introducing it to the game.
The throwable item rolled out with Tuesday’s version 10.20 content update but quickly disappeared again. Epic is yet to confirm whether or not it will be making a comeback.
File sharing was pulled from iCloud Drive during beta testing. Photo: Ian Fuchs/Cult of Mac
Apple has slowly been turning up the dial on what iOS can do, trying to make it more and more “computer” like. With iOS 13, one of the points of frustration with computing on iOS – and especially on iPad – is finally being addressed thanks to changes in the Files app.
With iOS 13, the Files app is taking a huge leap toward the Mac model of file management. There’s a whole bunch of smaller changes, as well as some big upgrades that make it really compelling.

The official Gmail app on iOS can now prevent tracking via external images.
A new update to the app brings the ability to disable automatic image loading. This makes it harder for message senders to establish whether you actually opened an email.
Will Google be the first of the tech giants to face an investigation? Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
More than half of U.S. state attorneys general are preparing an antitrust investigation into Google.
This will mark a major ramp-up in the battle between U.S. regulators and Silicon Valley tech giants. The investigation is likely to be announced Monday. Other tech giants also may face antitrust scrutiny.
A small increase in a market of 1.3 billion people sure adds up. Photo: Apple
Apple’s current share of the smartphone market in India is just 1%. But if Apple could somehow raise that to 4% it would bring in approximately $4.6 billion in extra revenue — alongside earnings upside of 65 cents per share.
That’s according to Evercore IMI analyst Amit Daryanani. And Daryanani thinks Apple may be able to do it, too.
Two new iPhone SE models for 2020? Photo: Sam Mills/Cult of Mac
It seems Apple hasn’t given up on the iPhone SE just yet. A new report claims an upgraded model is in the works — but you’ll have to wait until next spring to get your hands on it.
And it won’t be the iPhone SE upgrade you were hoping for.
Update: The Twitter account that posted the alleged Apple leak now calls the document a fake.
A supposedly “leaked” Apple employee support document contains alleged details of Apple’s upcoming releases.
The “Apple Software Development Resources” features information about Apple’s three new iPhones, four new Apple Watches, and new iPads. But it may not be entirely (or at all) genuine.
Meet MX Keys and MX Master 3, Logitech's new dynamic desktop duo. Photo: Logitech
A great mouse just got even better (and it brought a friend). Logitech’s new MX Master 3 mouse raises the bar on speed, thanks to a new electromagnetic scroll wheel that the company says can breeze through 1,000 lines in a second.
Meanwhile, the high-end mouse maintains the precision tracking, aggressively comfortable design and endless customization options that make it ideal for power users. And, it gains a new desktop productivity partner — MX Keys, a deluxe keyboard with sweet backlighting and other advanced options.
The series got the green light from Apple at the end of last year and was supposed to star Gere in the lead role, with Howard Gordon and Warren Leight set to serve as showrunners. Now the duo will have to find another company to produce it.
This is how iCloud Drive works. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
One of the handiest features in iOS 13 appears to have been pushed back to at least iOS 13.2. iCloud Folder Sharing, which would have let many people ditch Dropbox entirely, has disappeared from the current iOS 13 betas. And that’s not all. Also gone is the ability to pin a file to save it offline. What’s going on?
The iPad is fantastic with a multi-button mouse. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
For some of you, one of the main reasons to jump on iOS 13 right away is mouse support. You can connect any Bluetooth or USB mouse to your iPad, and use it pretty much like you’d use a mouse on the Mac.
You can even use a multi-button mouse. And guess what? You can assign all of those buttons to mouse functions. I’ve been using a mouse with my iPad on and off throughout the beta period. During that time, I’ve come up with a shortlist of the most useful mouse button features in iPadOS 13.

In a galaxy not so far away (our galaxy, actually) a brand new Star Wars game is on its way to iOS.
Lego Star Wars Battles is a brand new deck-building strategy game that will feature content from all nine of the Star Wars movies — including all your favorite characters and locations.
