The bold, unconventional name of Apple’s new entry-level laptop — MacBook Neo — surprised just about everyone, including many folks who expected the simple moniker “MacBook.” And it turns out the reasoning behind “Neo” is just as vivid as the laptop’s color palette, according to a new report.
Why Apple called it MacBook ‘Neo’
MacBook Neo starts at $599 — or $499 in with an educational discount — making it Apple’s most affordable Mac laptop ever. To hit that price point, Apple reimagined the product from scratch (including certain limitations) rather than trimming down an existing design. Apple made clear that this is not a shrunken MacBook Air or a recycled concept.
“MacBook Neo is an entirely new product that was reimagined from the ground up,” Colleen Novielli, Apple’s director of Mac product marketing, told Tech Radar.
She said Apple named it MacBook Neo to capture a sense of energy and personality that matches the machine itself, which arrives in eye-catching shades like citrus and blush that bleed all the way onto the keyboard.
So “don’t blame The Matrix,” the publication slyly noted, ruling out a nod to the classic sci-fi movie’s main character.
‘Fun, friendly and fresh’

Novielli said the team considered many different names before landing on Neo. But the goal was always the same: Find a word that radiated youth, enthusiasm and a sense of novelty.
She described the naming process as a search for something that felt “fun, friendly and fresh, and felt like it really suited the spirit of this product.” The name needed to set the MacBook Neo apart from the rest of Apple’s lineup, while still feeling authentically Mac.
A ‘neon’ connection?
There’s also a visual dimension to the name that TechRadar’s reporter noticed in person. “Neo” is just one letter away from “Neon.” And the MacBook Neo’s boldest color options — especially citrus and blush — have the luminous quality of neon lights. Whether or not that connection was intentional, it’s hard to ignore once you see the machine.
Novielli also acknowledged the gap that exists in the budget laptop category. She pointed out that many comparable machines offer a “just OK” experience. But Apple has “a relentless focus and attention to detail” and an obsession with getting the user experience right — even at a lower price point.
Could ‘Neo’ come to iPhone or iPad?
MacBook Neo’s distinctive name separates the machine from Apple’s other products. And it’s tempting to wonder whether the Neo branding could extend to other lines, like a budget iPhone Neo or an entry-level iPad Neo.
When TechRadar asked Novielli about this possibility, she smiled but declined to answer: “You were right that I can’t answer that.”
MacBook Neo is available for preorder now, starting at $599 or $499 for students and teachers. (See also: How to save big bucks with Apple’s educational discount.)
The low-cost laptop represents Apple’s most direct bid yet to attract first-time Mac buyers and Windows switchers priced out of the MacBook Air. And with a name chosen specifically to feel fresh, friendly, and full of energy, it’s clear that Apple wants this laptop to make an impression before anyone even opens the lid.
The MacBook Neo is Apple’s entry-level laptop. It has Apple’s signature all-day battery life and ease of use. It can swim through web browsing, document editing and other basic work tasks.
But if you want higher specs than its 8 GB memory or the maximum 512 GB storage, the MacBook Air may be a better choice.
