Apple helps take driver’s licenses digital
Leather wallets are so 20th century. Tap-and-go payments via an iPhone or Apple Watch can replace credit cards and cash. However, most people still need to carry around an old-fashioned plastic driver’s license. Apple is doing what it can to make them obsolete, though, and a handful of U.S. states have adopted Apple’s system for digital driver’s licenses. West Virginia just joined the list.
Exact details are scanty because the WV Department of Transportation has not yet made an official announcement. Users just noticed that West Virginia is now listed in Apple Wallet as one of the states offering digital driver’s licenses and IDs.
For the most part, the IDs benefit travelers, as they can be used at more than 250 TSA airports across the country. But other states recommend that drivers still carry their physical driver’s license.
