Wall Street ‘Suspicious’ of Delayed iPhone 5 Rumors

Here’s a shocker: Apple is playing its cards close to the vest about a product launch. That’s the opinion of one analyst who tells investors Friday he is “suspicious” of all the talk the Cupertino, Calif. company may delay the iPhone 5 until later this year.

“We are increasingly becoming suspicious around continued reports of a delayed iPhone 5 launch into September/October versus the typical June/July time frame,” writes Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities. Why the suspicion?

“There is a pattern of activity in motion within the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch,” White said. But at the heart of the matter is a belief Apple wants to keep consumers buying the iPhone 4. White doesn’t provide details on what supply chain indications prompt his concern.

“Essentially, we believe Apple is keeping its iPhone 5 cards extra close to the vest on this launch to avoid a falloff in iPhone 4 demand ahead of a refresh, especially given the February launch of the CDMA iPhone 4 with Verizon,” the analyst concludes.

Talk of a delayed iPhone 5 launch is already having an effect on Wall Street as financial analyst adjust their sales expectations in light of the chatter.

White may have a point. If word leaked about a new iPhone set for June or July, consumers considering purchasing an Apple handset likely would hold off, wanting to buy the latest version.

Hope it doesn’t look like that rendering when it finally arrives. The current design is much better and more attractive as well.

I was thinking the exact opposite. I especially like that the entire bottom is the home button.

Anyway, I’ve been saying this all along — I will be *very* surprised if an iPhone 5 doesn’t debut at the WWDC (and moderately disappointed, since I’m ready to upgrade my 3GS). I think they’ll also release the white iPhone 4 there, if they release it at all, to keep the line fresh for the budget-conscious buyers after they drop the price.

I see it as just a business move, because they just released the iPhone 4 to Verizon, anyone on Verizon with an iPhone 4 on Verizon would not switch just two or three months down the road. Extend that out a bit, and it may be different and effect sales in a positive way.

Ditch the bezel. Touch home button. I’m sold.

The iPhone 4 is out. You mean the iPhone 5.

Thing is, anyone that has been following the game and really cares about having the latest and greatest hasn’t bought the ViPhone 4. Because they “know” there will be a new one in the summer. Same with anyone on ATT that is eligible to upgrade their existing iPhone. So the rumors really don’t have that much of an effect since only perhaps 10% of folks actually pay attention to the sites anyway

  7. CharliK says:

I don’t like the full bottom home button, makes it easier to hit it by accident.

And I don’t like the seam on the front (doubt Jobs would like it either). But the rest I agree is actually quite nice. A lot of folks don’t like the 4 being all angles and edges. They got bumpers etc to round it out. So keep the thinness but round it again works.

Although Apple will likely keep the form of the 4 and just bump a couple of things inside. Save the major form change for next year when there’s enough carrier etc support to justify LTE, perhaps also NFC as well

  8. Bob Forsberg says:

Poor guesswork by individuals listening to rumors, then revising their guesses when the guess doesn’t pan out is the norm these days for “expert analysis”? Why does this even get space here?

  9. Britt4duke says:

I think the big problem last year was the infamous gizmodo pics of the iPhone 4 last year. Once those pics were released, the iPhone 3GS sales dropped like a rock. I ‘m guessing they are trying to take every measure to avoid that this time by not releasing ANYTHING!!! Any small leak is going to go mainstream now because of Gizmodo’s leaks last year.

haha, its like that game we played in school – slappy hands – you hold your hands out and the other kids puts his hands under your hands and tries to slap your hands. You keep expectign him to hit you, and so you keep pulling your hands back, then when you put them back out he NAILS you. EVERYTIME!!!…maybe its just me – i sucked at that game.

Anyway, Apple has released an iPhone in june/july like clockwork for the past 4 years. They have a very rigid product development ethos. On the one hand, i dont understand why everyone is so uncertain that there will be a june/july release. But on the other hand, i ma happy that they are and so is apple I’d suspect. As the less they say, the more we go crazy.

Just like Slappy Hands….is he gonna hit me? He’s not. Wait! Oh, now he isn – Oh! He got me!

It’s more likely a delay than a hold it close to your vest move. Delaying the iPhone 5 will have the same effect to keep demand up, and easier to achieve. Also, with iPad 2 taking the lime light, they got enough issues with manufacturers of parts/materials to keep up with demand.

  12. m3kw says:

People that do these mockups have artistic ability, but no clue about usability. This single button is not solving any problems, it is easy enough to find it and press it, this would give one less way to hold the phone. People that says getting rid of the home button isn’t thinking about usability either. How would you turn on your device if the home button is gone? Only use the top button? A touch sensitive button instead? that would too easily turn the device on. The tactile home button is the surest and fastest way to let you know you have pressed something without having to look.

Yes, I was thinking the same. That is one slick render..

one commenter hit the issue dead on… bullseye. analysts (and humans in general) can’t seem to
tolerate life when they don’t get all the juicy details regarding others. this causes drama / hysteria…
and leads to speculation / rumor. isn’t big business (and life) grand? what i really find hysterical is
that people still actually listen to analysts, and allow their words to manipulate stock values. i guess
the herd still hasn’t figured out how the game works… and i guess they never will. what a shame.
