Apple marks a remarkable milestone this April 1 — 50 years since Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne founded the company in a California garage on that date in 1976. To commemorate it, Apple said Thursday it will plan a series of global celebrations. And CEO Tim Cook published a personal letter on apple.com. It looks back on five decades of innovation while expressing gratitude to the billions of people who have made Apple what it is today.

“Thinking different has always been at the heart of Apple,” Cook said. “It’s what has driven us to create products that empower people to express themselves, to connect and to create something wonderful.”

Jobs, Wozniak and Wayne founded Apple on the notion that technology should be personal — a belief that, as Cook’s letter puts it, was “radical at the time” but ultimately “changed everything,” Apple said in a press release harkening back to the company’s iconic “Think Different” ad campaign.

And over the following five decades, that “personal” idea gave rise to a lineage of world-changing products. They include Apple II and Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro. And, or course, services like App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Pay and Apple TV that hundreds of millions of people rely on daily.

Cook’s message: The story belongs to you

At the heart of Cook’s letter is a message directed squarely at Apple’s users. While the company is typically forward-focused, he uses this anniversary to pause and acknowledge history. He notes Apple’s most meaningful achievements have been shaped not by engineers in Cupertino, but by the everyday people who put Apple devices to work in their lives.

“Every invention we bring into the world is just the beginning of a story,” Cook wrote. “The most meaningful chapters are written by all of you — the people who use our technology to work, learn, dream and discover.”

Cook goes on to describe the range of human experiences that Apple technology has touched — from cheering up loved ones in hospital, to capturing a toddler’s first steps, to launching businesses, writing books and rekindling old friendships.

“In your hands, the tools we make have improved lives, and sometimes even saved them,” he wrote.

Gratitude to teams, developers and customers

Cook’s letter also takes a moment to thank the many communities that have contributed to Apple’s story. Those include the company’s global workforce, its developer ecosystem and its customers worldwide.

“Your ideas inspire our work,” he wrote. He added, “Your trust drives us to do better. Your stories remind us of all we can accomplish when we think different.”

Celebrations ahead, but no details yet

In the coming weeks, Apple and its global community will celebrate the anniversary. They plan to recognize the creativity, innovation and impact that people around the world have made possible with Apple technology.

Apple has not yet detailed specific events or product announcements tied to the occasion, but the anniversary falls on April 1 — a date that could prove significant for any surprise reveals.

Even as it marks the milestone, Apple frames the anniversary as a launching pad rather than a finish line. The company says it will continue to push forward on groundbreaking silicon, transformative software and life-enriching products. And it plans to deepen commitments to environmental responsibility, education and accessibility.

Cook closes his letter with a callback to the “Think Different” campaign. It was a rallying cry for anyone who has ever imagined a better way.

“If you’ve taught us anything, it’s that the people crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do,” he wrote. “Here’s to you.”
