Orbotix’s robotic ball, Sphero, has gotten so popular over the past two years, even Obama has been spotted driving one around, but it’s finally getting an upgrade, as Orbotix has just announced Sphero 2.0 will launch later this month.

The updated Sphero 2.0 is twice as fast, three times as bright with multicolor LEDs, and it’s easier to drive than ever thanks to a re-configuration of the bots’ software. To take things up a notch, Orbotix is including two ramps with each purchase and you can buy a Nubby cover separately for a better off-roading experience.

The new device works with both iOS and Android. It doesn’t launch until August 30th, but you can pre-order one now for $129.99.

Pretty cool! However I can see the fun wear off after playing with it for an hour. Perhaps there might be a niche for people racing these things around in specially designed tracks with obstacles and all that. Would be a laugh to disguise one as a soccer ball and remote control it as a spectator. Imagine the player’s faces.
