Sofia Coppola is developing an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country for Apple TV+, according to a report Tuesday from Deadline.

Wharton’s 1913 novel is described as “a scathing story of ambition that follows Undine Spragg, a Midwestern girl who attempts to ascend in New York City society.”

Sources close to the production told Indiewire Tuesday that the upcoming adaptation is expected to be a limited series. A release date and casting details are not known at this time. It is also unknown if the series will be a period piece with a contemporary spin.

“Undine Spragg is my favorite literary anti-heroine and I’m excited to bring her to the screen for the first time,” Coppola said in a prepared statement.

The project marks Apple’s second collaboration with Coppola. Her first film for Apple, titled On the Rocks, will star Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. A release date has yet to be announced.

On the Rocks follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York. It was announced as part of Apple’s movie output deal with independent production company A24 last year.
