Among various chips Apple currently develops for products like smart glasses and Macs, new AI server chips will help power the Apple Intelligence platform, according to a report Thursday. And the new, immensely powerful AI server chips will be the first of their kind for Apple.
New AI server chips will help power Apple Intelligence platform
Apple currently works on semiconductors to run the AI servers behind the Apple Intelligence platform, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported. Toward that end, the new AI server chips would be a first for Cupertino, designed specifically for AI tasks. And that sounds like a good thing, considering Apple’s AI struggles. The new chips are in addition to chips for smart glasses and other products Apple is working on.
“[The new chips] will help process Apple Intelligence requests remotely and feed information to consumers’ devices,” the report said. “Today, Apple manages this task with the same chips it puts in high-end Macs, including the M2 Ultra.”
Project code-named Baltra to produce massively powerful chips

The report added the AI server project would use a component developed with Broadcom, according to The Information.
And the project, code-named Baltra, will most likely produce amazingly powerful chips before its completion by 2027. It may include different types of processors– even ones with up to eight times the processing and graphics cores found in today’s supercharged M3 Ultra.
Much-needed boost
The new AI semiconductors should make related Apple Intelligence services stronger and faster. Sound like a good thing, considering Apple’s AI struggles. Apple has repeatedly delayed AI functionality, including the long-awaited boost in Siri smarts.
AI chips and other new processors form in line with other Apple hardware technology initiatives run by executive Johny Srouji, such as in-house modem chips replacing Qualcomm products in Apple devices.
Apple declined to comment for Bloomberg‘s article.
