School sells hundreds of Apple devices for a fraction of their cost

It's not new, but for $50 you can't go wrong.

A Michigan school district is selling off close to 800 iMacs, MacBooks and iPads for astonishingly low prices ranging from $50 to $100.

The schools are in the process of upgrading their classroom technology, and made the decision to sell off the old equipment instead of adding it to the tons of unwanted computers and other gadgets that get thrown away each year.

All devices date from 2006 to 2010, which means they’re not exactly cutting-edge. However, this is more than reflected in the price Holland Public Schools is charging for its first-come, first-served sale.

More than 200 16GB iPad 2 units are priced at $80, 90 2006-era iMacs are going for $50 each, and 500 2009/2010 MacBooks are priced at $110. As you’d expect, every device sold has had its memory wiped and original factory settings restored.

The sale will take place Thursday at Holland High School, located at 600 Van Raalte Ave. in Holland, Michigan.

I think it’s a great idea because the prices the school is charging — a fraction of the cost of a new iPad, iMac or MacBook — makes the devices affordable to people who might not be able to afford them otherwise. It certainly beats the hell out of scrapping them.

Good on them more places should do this, I work for a TV broadcaster and the amount of Macs that get binned because of corporate rules is astounding. And these are high end macs that could be used to teach video/music production.

That is so sad is there anyway to get those macs donated? I know of schools especially here in Africa that could use them a great deal in teaching even at university level for film and stuff.

man i wish there was a way to contact them. :/ I’d really like to have one.. or even just the mouse and keyboard..

    1) They should offer them to the students first, so lower income students could afford to put some Apple gear in their homes.
    2) If it was me, there are dozens of wholesale companies that will drive up a truck and take the whole lot. I would go this route, myself.
