At Wednesday’s iPad 2 launch event, Steve Jobs described competitors as “flummoxed” to counter the iPad’s success, and he’s right. Almost a year after the iPad’s debut and we’re only starting to see the first of the original iPad’s real Android competition: not the 7-inch tweeners, but actual competition to the iPad’s software and hardware feature set. So what does Apple do? They come along with the iPad 2 and effortlessly cut the legs out from underneath the competition.
Samsung is one of Apple’s biggest suppliers and one of its biggest competitors, especially in the smartphone and tablet space: Samsung’s still unreleased Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of the few Android tablets that seemed to be competitive in features and hardware with the original iPad. Stress original, though, because in the wake of the iPad 2, Samsung VP Lee Don-Joo has gone on the record as saying that parts of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are “inadequate” compared to the iPad 2.
Flummoxed is right. Apple’s modus operandi for product revisions is hardly some sort of arcane mystery: they improve the software, make the device thinner and try to eke out some more battery life. How did Samsung — one of Apple’s biggest component suppliers — get caught off guard by the iPad 2?
The answer? They didn’t, of course. They knew what was coming. As a company, though, they just weren’t agile or resourceful enough to head it off.

Umm… no one knows how much RAM the iPad 2 has yet. Even so, as long as everything runs well and the way it’s supposed to, who cares how much RAM? Not saying iPad 2 is perfect but sales will speak for itself.
How can it be fanboyism when the Samsung dude already said his own product sucks compared to the iPad.
The playbook doesn’t exist yet…. Android 3, will support flash “in the future”, but not yet… so, who cares flash??

Samsung is a huge corporation. It is likely that the division of Samsung that has a contract with Apple for these parts, is a separate division from the one developing the Galaxy Tab 10.1 listed above. Also, we know how Apple is with NDAs and have heard rumors about their difficult contracts. It is even more likely, separate division or not, that the Apple orders could not be disclosed to the development division. I would think it highly unlikely that the Tab Development Team would know anything about iPad 2. Because of the nature of this industry, Apple would be idiotic not to assure that the left hand at Samsung (development) would know nothing about what the right hand at Samsung (manufacturing/supply chain) was doing.
Well I guess the egg is on your face now isn’t it? It’s been confirmed that it has 512mb same as the iPhone 4.

So iPad wants credit for beating the pants off those jokers? They can have it.
So Jobs was right that iPad 2 will be the first dual-core tablet to ship in volume. But now we start to see some real competition. Xoom is the only real competition to make it to market so far. Xoom is a brick (weight compared to iPad2) and runs Android which is as unproven as the glorified, hyped up cellphone OS called iOS was when iPad 1 came out. Apple did take the luxury to not rush out their product until it and it’s OS were ready. Xoom made a CRITICAL mistake here and all Android Tablets are going to pay for Moto’s greed to be the first to market.
Soon there will be other real “play-ers” in the tablet space – like RIM’s Playbook, HP’s Touchpad and the most promising Android Tablet of them all – Samsung’s new Galaxy Tabs. Trust me when I say that none of these will be released until they are READY. Come back in a year and we can have a real discussion on where things lie.
For now, I wait anxiously for Friday to get my first iPad – and also wait with baited breath for a REAL Android Tablet to hit the market. That still could be the Xoom, but my gut is betting on the new Galaxy Tabs. Me and my wallet are ready and waiting for both (iPad and Android).
Just because the iPad doesn’t suit your needs or your highly advanced brilliance doesn’t make it hit. A lot of folks have found that it does a great many things. No one cares about the Xoom or the Galaxy Tab. All the apps we want are in NEITHER of these Android tablets. That is why the iPad2 effortless cut through the competition. Tabs are about apps not hardware. :)
