We’ve been talking a lot recently about the so-called “budget iPhone” that Apple will in all probability announce in September, but exactly how “budget” are we talking about here?

Now, the CEO of the rumored manufacturer of the budget iPhone is speaking up, and telling shareholders not to expect it to be cheap.

Speaking at his company’s shareholders meeting Thursday, Pegatron CEO T.H Tung said that Apple’s “budget” iPhone wouldn’t really be inexpensive. “The price [on it] is still high,” Tung said.

Pegatron is widely believed to be manufacturing the budget iPhone while Foxconn focuses on the premium line, and has recently gone on hiring pushes to ramp up manufacturing on a mystery product. So Tung would know.

The question is, how high is the price exactly? Past reports have speculated a $350 unsubsidized price, making the budget iPhone a mid-range phone. This makes a lot of sense to me: it would allow Apple to push out of the premium end while still maintaining margins. Only time will tell, though.
