The iPhone ranked as the world’s top shipping smart phone in the third quarter of 2017 — but the iPhone 8 didn’t even crack the top five.

Instead, older (and cheaper) iPhones dominated the list. That doesn’t mean iPhone 8 tanked, though. A variety of factors account for its relatively low numbers.

iPhone X is a whole lot cheaper to make than it is to buy

The new iPhone X may retail for over $1,000, but according to a teardown by engineers at IHS Markit, the 64GB model costs Apple in the vicinity of just $370.25.

That’s around $50 more than the previous most expensive iPhone, the 256GB iPhone 8 Plus. Understandably, what makes the biggest difference in terms of components are the TrueDepth sensor and the Super Retina OLED display.

Apple expands its ‘Everyone Can Code’ program beyond the U.S.

Having experienced success with its “Everyone Can Code” initiative inside the U.S., Apple is expanding its coding education program to more than 20 colleges and universities in other countries.

Twenty different international universities — in Denmark, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K. — will now offer Apple’s one-year Swift Curriculum, designed to give people tools to get jobs in the “app economy.”

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel featured the iPhone X on Tuesday night’s edition of Lie Witness News, asking people on the streets of Hollywood to hold the handset and give their impressions of Apple’s $1,000 smartphone.

Few realized they in fact held an iPhone 4 from 2010.

Steve Wozniak has categorically denied being an adviser for a new augmented reality chap app launched by New England Patriots tight end Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski.

Called Mojiit, the forthcoming mobile AR chat app lets users create, “a stunning, 3D animation of yourself that you [can] send to your friends in augmented reality.” However, despite having made frequent mentions of having Woz on board, Apple’s co-founder denies that this is the case.

Snapchat hopes massive app changes will attract new users

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has revealed that Snapchat’s app will be undergoing a major redesign, after the company fell short of expected growth projections for the quarter.

In a letter to investors, Spiegel blamed the difficulties on the service being too difficult for many users to understand. “One thing we have heard over the years is that Snapchat is difficult to understand or hard to use,” he wrote — adding that, “Our team has been working on responding to this feedback.”

Now that the iPhone X is out and into the hands of customers, developers are eager to roll out new app updates, taking advantage of the handset’s new TrueDepth camera system.

One of the first is glasses manufacturer Warby Parker, which is already employing the Face ID facial mapping data feature to make suggestions about which glasses would suit people’s face shape.

The iPhone X hasn’t even been out for a week but it’s already been used to film an incredible short film.

Made in Paris, a short film about Elise Lepinteur, the protégée of world-famous pastry chef Christophe Adam, debuted on YouTube today. Although the film doesn’t mention the iPhone X, it showcases the phones capabilities with gorgeous close-ups of deserts and other pastries being prepared.

Walmart Pay inches closer to beating out Apple Pay

Walmart Pay, the mobile payment system launched by the retailer in late 2015, may be on the verge of overtaking Apple Pay usage in the United States, a new report claims.

The service is available for both iOS and Android, across 4,774 Walmart stores, and is currently enrolling “tens of thousands of new users” per day. Two-thirds of them utilize the service for a second time within 21 days, Walmart claims — thereby giving it impressive repeat business.

Apple manufacturer Wistron reportedly wants to expand its iPhone SE manufacturing in India. The company is currently scouting for 100 acres of land to help it do so.

Wistron has quietly shortlisted several possible locations in Bangalore for its new facility, including one close to the nearby airport. In addition to Apple, the new facility may also be used to supply other brands.
