Official Apple Store App Will Be Phased Out For An Advanced New Mobile Safari Web App [Rumor]

According to 9to5Mac, a proven source has told them that Apple’s going to phase out their official Apple Store app in favor of a mobile web version of the online Apple Store.

That certainly seems like a more consolidated approach to letting people shop from their iPads and iPhones, but what about the Apple Store app’s geolocation functionality that allows you to get in line at the Genius Bar or go check out a workshop at the physical retail location you’re currently visiting? 9to5Mac doesn’t know, but they say that Apple could either keep the official app around, or use Mobile Safari’s ability to access a user’s location to do it through the web.

Expect the mobile version of the online store to pop up in 2012.

It would bring it in line with Google Chrome who already have a pretty cool web App store.

I’m finding it hard to find a reason why Apple would do this. The application works.
