Oasis Star Declares: “iPhones Are For $%@!s”

So here’s former Oasis megastar Noel Gallagher, quoted in The Mirror this weekend:

I just want a basic 1994 Nokia mobile. I can keep it in my back pocket and just do the basics with it – phone and text. What would I need a camera on it for? iPhones are for Cockneys and ****s. And they are far too big.

It’s not clear to us exactly which insult The Mirror decided to blank out with asterisks, but feel free to use your imagination on that.

As for Cockneys – traditionally, they are Londoners born “within the sound of Bow Bells”; within earshot of the bells of St Mary-le-Bow church.

These days, however, the definition of Cockney is more flexible and you’ll find it used to describe all sorts of Londoners. Noel Gallagher, of course, is from Manchester, and considers all Londoners to be softies. Sorry, ****s.

Perhaps a little more surprising is the phone he says he wishes he had: “A 1994 Nokia mobile.” A phone indisputably larger than the iPhone.

Hmm, 1994? I think he means the Nokia 2110. Like this:

Nokia 2110, about as 1994 as it gets

Ah yes, something of a classic. Perhaps Noel’s got a point.

  3. graemeshaw says:

The Nokia 2100 came out in 2003.  The Nokia 2010 came out in 1994 – http://jasonbstanding.com/blog

  4. freighttrain2126 says:

1994? was text messaging even a feature back then? And i think the phone of the day back then was the huge zack morris phones, and even nokia phones didn’t get small until 2001-2002. maybe he should get a veer? and if he thinks iPhones are big, what does he think of those jumbo android phones?

  5. Honey Badger says:

What a douche. Just because he likes his Nokia is no reason to slam any other phone or their users.

Use what whatever phone you like Noel. We don’t care.

Probably just figured that shooting his mouth off this way would get him some press.

  6. VGISoftware says:

These are the effects of substance abuse, people!

  7. johanna_M says:

well in 1994 you could probably find someone that listened to Oasis….

(On the upside, next time Noel Gallagher decides to go on stage we all know just what kind of crappy outdated projectiles to pelt him with)

  8. crateish says:

Oasis were to the Beatles, As Liberace was to Jerry Lee Lewis.

  9. il-non-competente says:

VIVA NOEL …..and VIVA my 13,90 euros Nokia Phone.

  10. BearsFan34 says:

Worthless words from a worthless “artist” who’s “music” is nothing more than copycat garbage. Irrelevant statement from irrelevant person is irrelevant.

  11. Facts says:

Nokia 2100 was released in 2003. I think the phone he wants is Nokia 2110 (released in 1994), a true classic and it DOES have SMS.

  12. Asmith1802 says:

All the more reason to keep my iPhone. Gallagher is to relevant what larry Grayson was to rugby league

  13. Craig Stark says:

He’s probably to busy being off his face on drugs and booze to have the brain cells to operate an iPhone!!

    p.s. your musics SH*T

  14. Treat7777 says:

Call somebody who cares what Noel says. oops. Nobody cares… just another lame musician looking for press about his attitude instead of what musicians are supposed to be about, which is making music. Of course nobody cares about his music anymore, he is probably upset because with his royalties can’t afford an iphone much less new music lessons. Keep a simple phone, simpleton.

  15. Hydraki says:

oh great another baby who can’t let go of the past what a douche..

  16. gareth edwards says:

hahahahahahahaha – god know’s what that makes his brother Liam, Noel was the brains after all….

  17. csman says:

He’s probably right. Also, the battery life of those phones was epic, 4 to 5 days, normal use. Nowadays you can barely make the day! iphone4s? don’t get me started =P

We all know iphones are also used a symbol of status, and Oasis is a working class band.

  18. realitybytes says:

This moron hasn’t had a lucid thought in years…his biggest daily, most thought provoking challenge is getting to a bathroom in time. I’m sure I want to listen to this pile of slag advise me on technology.

  19. MacHead84 says:

Is this guy even relevant enough to report on? He wants go to back to 94 because thats when his music was actually on the radio

  20. gilest says:

goodness me, you’re right: a typo in my web search took me in the wrong direction for a link and an image. I’ll fix immediately. Thanks for highlighting…

  21. prof_peabody says:

Interesting.  If one of the biggest a-holes in the world thinks the iPhone is crap, then it must be fantastic in reality.

  22. Figurative says:

i just love these self-centered, self-important twits that are compelled to comment on things where they have no interest.  OK, you like an old Nokia phone.  Cool.  But for you to actually go out of your way to put down someone else’s choice…. get a life you loser.  No one really cares about your phone choice.

  23. Honey Badger says:

Well yeah, they had great battery life… they do a fraction of what any smart phone does.

Clearly, his requirements do not facilitate the need to carry a smart phone. That’s fine, I’m cool with that. No need to go running your mouth.

  24. gilest says:

And now fixed. Apologies for the error.

  25. ? Planeta Apple ? says:

Oasis? what the f**k? the crappy band that imitates Beatles? LOL! Get a life Gallagher!…and get a real Band! don’t copy The Beatles!

  26. Ed_Kel says:

I wonder what kind of pot he prefers.

  27. gnomehole says:

Oasis who?    Isn’t this a mid-90s one hit wonder still using an 80s phone?   Why are we listening to them exactly?

Nothing like calling out other people while really just making yourself look like a complete jackass.

  28. 300AShareMakesMeSmile says:

I guess he hasn’t seen those monster-sized Android smartphones that will burst any ordinary pocket if you can even manage to fit it in.

  29. Damsean102 says:

Good use of Wikipedia on ‘Cockneys’.

  30. curtis jackson says:

WTF is this fool! I guess when you have no career, you’ll do anything to get in the spotlight.

  31. JXChain says:

He’s jealous that the iPhone is more popular than him.

  32. Sam Parmenter says:

Wow, what a sad sad bunch of replies.

    “Who cares”
    “Who is he”
    “Their music is ****”

The Mirror is a scummy, trashy newspaper that nobody reads apart from idiots and retards. Noel Gallagher is a grade A muppet but he isn’t stupid, he says things because he knows that plenty of idiots will get all angry and defensive when he says the iphone is rubbish.

Oasis were a great band with loads of fantastic songs. If you don’t like them, don’t listen to them but don’t make yourself look like an immature twat by being so petty and jumping to the iphones defence. If you don’t care what he says then why are you whinging on a forum about how wrong he is and bringing his music into it.

  33. Mikael Fransson says:

Isn’t Noel about the same size as the old Nokia Communicator?

  34. Mikael Fransson says:

and….he got what he wanted…attention. Who listens to the Gallagher brothers anymore?

  35. gareth edwards says:

to be fair, they did one great album (definitely maybe) and the rest has been filler and treading water at best. Most of their stuff when they were together was MOR tripe, I’d have Status Quo over Oasis any day, and that sums them up.

  36. MacGoo says:

So this contemporary of the Wallflowers and Hootie and the Blowfish (who had awesome songs, BTW – Champagne Supernova is now stuck in my head) thinks the iPhone is a snobby, too large accessory. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this outdated rocker has similarly outdated ideas about the iPhone. Once upon a time (when the iPhone was expensive and niche), he might have been right. But now that they are so prevalent, this seems more like a case of “I’m right, and the world is wrong,” which generally fails to be a watertight assumption.

  37. Ibelieve says:

Hey Folks! Don’t get mad at the “Oasis megastar Noel Gallagher”. First you have to understand that Noel Gallagher does NOT know how to use a smart phone, High Tech is considered way above his league, let alone an iPhone? that would be like mind boggling for him, he has no idea of what to do with things like “icon, apps, etc…”
Well, it goes to show you that a good “Education” is always good for your mind and a high school  drop-out and got old fast at the same time has caught up with him.

  38. Anonymousguest2211 says:

douche.  I love the “man I’m anti-tech and I wish I was still in the pre-tech days, all this email, cell phone, tech world we live in is bs”…. when do these people realize that by trying to “be different” they are essential being the same as every other moron out there with this “i wanna be different” attitude

  39. Ibelieve says:

    COMMENT ALERT! COMMENT ALERT!!!…
OLD Gramp in tha haus! OLD Gramp in tha haus!
Hey OLD Gramp! Uncle Ben Franklin just called and wanted to know if you can stop by to make some phone call with him using 2 cans and string in between?
Oh Yeah! he said he’d moved to the new address and here it is…”http://microsoft.com
So have FUN while you’re there… OLD Gramp!!!
    LOL….

  40. Alan says:

Literally every interview he did on the build up to his album he mentioned the iPad, saying how much he loved it.

He also mentioned getting a mac for Xmas last year

  41. Alan says:

Its amazing that only negative get reported.

Last week Noel had the 2nd biggest selling album in the world.

There’s an radio quote him saying iPad. There are other tablets available actually there’s not as they’re rubbish.. That keep apple fan boys happy?

  42. Norton Hester Reardon III says:

Wow, this coming from a completely washed-up and no-name has-been. Hey Noel, remember back in the early 90’s when you and your whiney brother boldly proclaimed that “blow-oasis” was going to be the next coming of The Beatles? How’d that work out for you, you pompous and arrogant prick? And wasn’t it funny when someone beaned you off the head with a shoe during one of you live performances. Must have been a doozy, so awesome!

    Stay irrelevant my friend.

  43. Alan says:

Lastly he said in interview he hated qwerty keyboards, as new to computers. Why could it go abcde etc.

A guy from apple text in saying he’d see if the could get him one made…

    Gallagher&apple fanboy :)

  44. Morgan says:

Fo all of it’s lack of any real news I expected this to have been penned by Nicole.

  45. trex67 says:

I’m pretty sure they redacted “See You Next Tuesday,” a common Brit expletive.

Oasis had a few good songs in the ’90s, like Nokia. And like Nokia, yesterday’s news.

  46. Ibelieve says:

Another word.. “he is a dump ass!”

  47. Ibelieve says:

    Oopps! Typo “dumB ass”

  48. Lago1963 says:

I think he was the surviving duel who was caught lip syncing in concert. :-P

  49. robgilgan says:

The man is just expressing his opinion in mobile phone preferences, for Christ’s sake. If you don’t want a camera and a bunch of other apps to carry around in your pocket, a voice/text phone is all you need. He just used the expletives because if he’d said, “Well, that’s my preference,” it never would have been included. There are rules to working the media, you know.

  50. Floydstyle says:

the iPhone is as big as your ego.  Where is Oasis btw? ohh wait…

  51. Allan Robertson says:

Well I like the iPhone, but confess I still use my Nokia 8110 (true Matrix phone) for everyday stuff. The iPhone 4S is tempting tho.

  52. vanmacguy says:

One person cares, me. Noel is extremely talented, the only one from Oasis that had any talent in fact IMO.

And he’s entitled to his opinion like the rest of us.

He’s also got a new album out and a tour coming up so he’s looking for publicity.

And with this article and the preceding article from the Daily Mail, he got it.

  53. Crossworlds says:

Noel like his brother is just an ignorant idiot. I remember not long ago how Oasis said Manowar, one of my favourite bands were “loud and shit” yet they had never heard a single song by the heavy metal band.

  54. Grivids says:

he is an arsehole I know!

  55. Bitter Witch says:

People care too much.  I’m too cold to care.

  56. Mark says:

You’d rather have Status Quo than Oasis? Really….? The band that only played three chords for more than 20 years and had more comeback gigs than any other outfit in the history of music?

And What’s The Story (Morning Glory) was filler?  Wow. That’s some opinion. People are strange.

  57. Dogville002 says:

    Asshole !!!!

  58. CharliK says:

Reminds of a Comic Con when someone asked Joel Whedon and cast how they felt about the Parents Television Council demanding that Buffy be removed from tv because it promoted the use of magic, satanism etc.

Their reply “Hadn’t heard about that. Awesome.”

  59. Couldcarless says:

    Noel who?

  60. gareth edwards says:

Yup, I’d rather have Quo, that’s how badly I view Oasis. They lack originality to such a degree I would rather have the Quo on side. I forgot about ‘What’s the story’ (the shame) but still, they suck on so many levels.
