British carrier O2 has released a new app for Android and iOS called O2 Tracks, which allows users to listen to the U.K.’s official top 40 singles to their smartphone. It’s available to download now from the App Store and Google Play, and O2 customers can enjoy the service for just £1 ($1.56) per week.
O2 Tracks isn’t a streaming service like Spotify or Napster. Instead, it downloads the top 40 chart to your device over 3G or Wi-Fi, and automatically updates in the background once a week. Although this will take up a bit of your storage space, it means that all 40 tracks are accessible offline, and that you don’t need a data connection to enjoy them.
O2 Tracks is also focused on the top 40 — as opposed to an entire catalog of songs and albums — and it aims to make them as affordable as possible. For O2 customers, the service is a bargain at just £1 per week, and it’s added to your mobile bill.
Those on other networks can download the app and use it, too, but they’ll have to pay £4.99 ($7.78) per month (after a two-week free trial). Although that’s cheaper than buying the top 40 tracks each week, it’s half the price of a Spotify subscription, which gives you unlimited access to more than 15 million tracks.
In addition to the top 40 singles, O2 Tracks provides users with celebrity news and gossip.
