Customers in UK pizza chain Pizza Express can now pay their bills with a Paypal account via an iPhone.
The chain’s new app does all the usual stuff – finds your nearest restaurant, gives you directions, shows you the menu, even lets you book a table – but adds bill payments as an extra topping.
When you get your bill, you’ll see a 12-digit number on it. Enter this into the app, then your Paypal ID and password. That’s it, you’ve paid. The neat thing about this is that it doesn’t have to be the iPhone owner who pays – anyone can grab the phone and use it as a terminal to access their Paypal account.
If you have a discount code or voucher, you can use that too. Not sure what you do about tips for the waiting staff. Probably best to stick to retro cash for that.

You can add extra for the tip when you pay.
It really doesn’t look like paying using the app is any quicker. You still have to attract the waiter to get the bill, then confirm it with them after you’ve paid. I just get the bill, put down my money + tip, then leave. Very speedy. Plus I reckon it is just as fast to pay by using a card machine.
How do that wiating staff know you’ve paid. I ‘m not going to hand my phone over to them, the phones worth more then they’ll make in a month!
I’m trying hard to understand the problem that this technology is supposed to be solving…
This app is awesome! I just hope Pizza Hut make a similar one, I love Pizza Hut!

Hold on there. I thought the Brits already had a proliferation of NFC devices everywhere. This is a downgrade.
Really? A 12-digit number the user has to manually type in? Why not a bar-code of some kind to scan in?
That sounds so much easier than paying with a credit card.
Just wait for NFC instead.

really do we? i’ve seen it in restaurants saying you can pay wirelessly but i havent seen many nfc devices
This should be using a QR Code not some stupid 12-digit code you have to manually enter!
This is defo the future. Can’t wait for the day you just swipe your iPhone at the till to pay.
