Two new HDMI adapters from Other World Computing (OWC) solve the external display limitations that have frustrated Apple Silicon Mac users since the M1 chip’s introduction, the company said Monday. The new OWC USB-C Quad HDMI 4K Adapter and redesigned OWC USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Adapter offer Mac owners a way to connect multiple external monitors without juggling multiple dongles.
“Whether you’re working with spreadsheets, streaming data, editing video or just need more screen real estate to stay productive, we believe your gear shouldn’t hold you back,” said Larry O’Connor, OWC’s founder and CEO. “With our new Quad and enhanced Dual HDMI adapters, we’re giving users the power to easily expand their visual workspace, without the complexity or cost of juggling multiple adapters or sacrificing performance.”
OWC USB-C Quad HDMI 4K Adapter connects four 4K displays from one port
Since Apple introduced its M1 chip in 2020, external display limitations — especially those on base model MacBooks — have frustrated users. While higher-end MacBook Pro models with Pro or Max chips, Mac Studio and Mac mini support multiple displays natively, the base models have remained restricted to a single external monitor.
The new OWC USB-C Quad HDMI 4K Adapter, priced at $149.99, allows users to connect up to four 4K Ultra HD displays through a single USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt port. This addresses one of the most significant limitations of Apple Silicon Macs, where base model M1, M2, M3, and M4 MacBooks are typically restricted to just one external display.
The adapter leverages DisplayLink Pro technology to deliver smooth multi-display performance while reducing the burden on the host computer’s CPU, interface bandwidth, and battery life compared to using multiple separate adapters. Users can choose between extended or mirror display modes, and the device supports HDMI audio pass-through to connected monitors.
For MacBook users, the adapter provides up to 90 watts of pass-through charging when used with a USB-C power adapter. That ensures laptops stay powered while driving multiple screens. The device comes with an integrated 11.8-inch USB-C cable. The adapter is bus-powered, making it convenient for both permanent desk setups and portable multi-display presentations.

OWC also introduced a redesigned USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Adapter for $69.99. It’s aimed at users who need a simpler two-display solution. This palm-sized adapter is particularly well-suited for classroom environments, bring-your-own-device business settings and everyday productivity tasks. Currently only the older model is on Amazon (and a bit pricier), by the way.
The dual adapter maintains the same core benefits as its quad counterpart. That includes the ability to solve Apple Silicon Mac display limitations and support for both extended and mirror modes. It features a shorter 9-inch integrated USB-C cable and focuses on portability and ease of use. Users can even chain two dual adapters together to achieve four displays if needed.
Broad compatibility beyond Apple Silicon
While these adapters are particularly valuable for Apple Silicon Mac users, they work with a wide range of devices. DisplayLink technology ensures compatibility with Intel-based Macs, PCs and Chromebooks equipped with USB-C ports. This universal compatibility makes the adapters useful for mixed-device environments and users who switch between different machines.
The adapters are backward compatible with any HDMI display, projector or TV at its maximum resolution. That provides flexibility for various setup configurations. Both products come with OWC’s one-year limited warranty.
Both new OWC HDMI adapters are available now through OWC’s website and authorized retailers like B&H Photo. They will probably also appear on Amazon sooner or later.
