As expected, third-gen Apple TV pre-orders have started arriving early in the mail. The set-top box includes 1080p HD video support and a faster processor. It comes with an updated interface and sells for $99.
Shipping estimates in Apple’s online store for the new Apple TV have slipped past tomorrow’s launch date, but those who were lucky enough to pre-order before stock sold out should be getting their device in the mail either today or tomorrow. We’ve got an unboxing for you to check out.
Cult of Mac reader Jeremy Gonis sent us these pictures of his new Apple TV. As you can tell, the dimensions have remained the same and Apple is still shipping that tiny remote. You can read some of the early reviews of the new Apple TV for more opinions and perspectives on Apple’s latest hockey puck.

I still can’t figure out why they are selling you something you can’t even use out off the box. You still have to by an HDMI cable. Not that they are expensive (when you know where to buy), but still. I still remember when I got the apple TV 2 and realised that I needed to go back to the store to buy a cable.
Boxee Box > Apple TV
I am excited as heck for my iPad though!
I unboxed mines too just now, exactly as shown above. I just lol-ed how the FedEX guys like ran up my garden (which was a hill with plants where nobody shouldn’t walk onto) to my front door, they must be having a rough day. But man, setup was a real b***h on my 128bit password.
Other than that.. my satisfaction is pretty much average right now on the Apple TV. It sure felt a lot faster and fluid at Best Buy a few months ago on the last generation. Mines is a whole lot of lag for everything. Maybe it has something to do with my router.. maybe.
Can’t wait for my iPad to come tomorrow though!
Ugly packaging for an Apple product. That remote control shoved in diagonally like that. Come on!
Hmm, I ordered mine on the day it was announced and I just got delivery notification for March 21? So 14 days after I pre-ordered and others who ordered the same day as me are getting them in 9 days?
WTF?
Received the new Apple TV this morning. Ditto about the need to go buy an HDMI cable. Adding it would raise the “magical” price to $105 or more, which must be the reason for omitting it.
Are you just dumb?
Bummer.
Have you ever bought a clothes dryer? They don’t come with a power cord.
If it’s so cheap, why are you complaining?
The smart thing to do is to go to Amazon, and buy HDMI cables in bulk for situations like this. When I got my new Apple TV yesterday, it was no big deal, I went to my stash and grabbed a new hdmi cable for the old Apple TV I was moving to the living room.
