The $99 second-gen AppleTV has already supplanted the iPad in at least one metric: Netflix has just announced that more content is Watched Instantly on the iOS set-top box than on the best-selling tablet.
It’s a surprising metric. Apple’s iPad sales account for 15 million units to date, while the AppleTV has only sold about a million units. None the less, Netflix is doling out more hours of content on the underdog box than on the iPad.
It makes sense: although the iPad may have more units out there, it’s also has a lot more functionality to divide user time than just serving up Netflix. Meanwhile, the AppleTV is solely dedicated to watching streaming video content, and Netflix functionality is baked right into the device, no App Store downloads required.
