Murderbot season 1 did well enough in the ratings that Apple TV+ committed to season 2 on Thursday.
The news comes as the season 1 finale of the sci-fi comedy thriller becomes available to stream. A renewal isn’t surprising, given that t series stayed one of the top 10 most-watched shows every week during its entire run.
Murderbot season 2 is definitely on the way
Murderbot, Apple’s latest foray into the sci-fi genre, is about a cyborg — part robot, part human — built to provide security in very dangerous situations. The series follows the cyborg as it breaks the programming that forces it to kill … and then goes looking for a purpose. But don’t expect a traditional action show, as there’s plenty of comedy mixed in.
The Apple TV+ show is an adaptation of a popular and award-winning series of novels written by Martha Wells. Alexander Skarsgård, who won Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG awards for roles that include Succession, Big Little Lies and True Blood plays the eponymous lead character.
The team behind the series is obviously enthusiastic about season 2.
“We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’ world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team,” said creators and executive producers Chris and Paul Weitz.
“Chris, Paul, Alexander and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+. “We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, Sanctuary Moon in season two.”
Because season 1 is a hit!
Adapting books into TV series doesn’t always go well, but it’s clear Chris and Paul Weitz pulled off the challenge with Murderbot.
It earned a 96% critics approval rating on the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Beyond that, the sci-fi series appears near the tops of the streaming ratings charts week after week, so it’s obviously built a large audience.
