Magazines Begin To Populate Apple’s Newsstand App

By

newsstand

A few magazines have begun to populate Apple’s Newsstand app on the eve of the October 12th release of iOS 5. Right now the only two magazines that I could add to Newsstand were Wired and Popular Science. They only showed up on an iPad I wasn’t able to find anything for the iPhone.

If you have access to an iPad running iOS 5 launch the App Store and search for the two publications shown in the image above. I tried searching for “magazine” and “newspaper” also, but it wasn’t really clear if any of the results would work or not. Hopefully Apple will clarify all of this soon by adding a category or two to the App Store.

I hope there will be more on launch day for iOS 5 tomorrow. I’d especially like to see some foreign newspapers, but Apple has been awfully quiet about Newsstand. It could be possible that they were unable to generate the interest they’d hoped for.

Where did you find the magazines? Is there a section for Newsstand in the App Store? I can’t access the store directly from the Newsstand app.

Why is this a story? Haven’t you heard iTards don’t read anything unless it’s written by crApple

Go to the App Store on your iPad. Search for Magazines. Careful though it’s not clear what is what yet. I hope they add a new category tomorrow to make it easier or they turn the Store button on in the Newsstand app.

There is a problem with foreign magazines. For example we can’t put our updated version to store, ’cause Apple reject them and say you have a problem with subscription and attach a photo. We write – this is not our app in screenshot. We put one more time, and allways get the same result :( It’s like they don’t want us to be there.

Maybe in iOS5 GM? It is not working on 5.0(9A5313e) :(

I have iOS5 GM for 3GS and I am now able to click on the store button (previously greyed out). There are currently only 7 things available, but the dedicated newsstand section is active!

Seems not to be available in all countries. When I signed-in using my PH account, it shows “Cannot connect to the iTunes store”…

where did you get the wallpaper for that screenshot? do you have a link? it looks the the temporary background for folders before Apple went with the ‘linen’ one.

To tell if it is for the news stand, look at the icon in the app store. if it is shaped like a magazine then ts for newsstand.

You’re talking about the App Store?
Doesn’t Newsstand have it’s own store kind of like iBooks? Store button in the corner?

Meh, still don’t like how Nesstand looks, should have been an app like iBooks and not an ugly folder kind of thing, looks out of place…

  13. Peter Teal says:

The apps i found for newsstand where in the main app store under news

A poor attempt to emulate Zinio.  It seems that the Zinio/Apple battle is now officially on.
Newsstand has no search or category function, just a hotchpot of titles.
The worst is, you are stuck with it, like it or not, it is fixed to IOS5.
I noted that a prvious subscription to National Geograhic was moved to Newsstand automatically.
Don’t get me wrong, I dig my IPad and IPhone.  I am sure as time improves, the app will improve.  But like so many other “true Apple apps”, they just don’t seem to be as good as what the many app developers can produce.  Perhaps Apple should stick to the hardware and operating system and leave apps to the developers.  Many developers are turning their backs on Apple for forcing such a high commission on them.
    Lots of food for thought.
