Macally designed the new MminiDock with the M4 Mac mini in mind. It sits under the tiny desktop, increasing the selection of available ports with front-facing USB-A, plus 4K HDMI, an audio jack and more without increasing the computer’s footprint. The M4 Mac mini offers outsize power, and that includes a range of ports. But there are some notable absences. It includes exactly zero (0) USB-A ports because Apple is ready for everyone to move on to the smaller USB-C standard. Which means those who still use USB-A accessories need a dock.
The Macally MminiDock targets M4 Mac mini users who want a broader selection of connectivity options, as it adds a trio of USB-A ports. These support USB 2.0, so they top out at 60 MB per second — fairly slow compared to the 1,250 MB offered by accessories that use the more recent USB 3.2 gen 2 standard, but still quick enough to be useful. And the speed has no effect on accessories like keyboards, mice, printers, etc.
The dock also includes an HDMI port that supports 4K at 60Hz. While the M4 Mac mini includes one of these, a second port enables an additional HDMI monitor.
The Macally MminiDock features a full-size SD card slot, which Apple’s wee little desktop doesn’t. And there’s a rear-facing 3.5mm audio jack so speakers don’t have to be permanently plugged into the front of the Mac.
Up to 8TB of extra storage, too
Don’t overlook a highlight of the accessory: an integrated SSD enclosure that supports up to 8TB of high-speed M.2 NVMe SSDs.
