‘Leaked’ iPhone 7 confirms what we all feared

The iPhone 7 is on its way. But a major redesign apparently isn't.

The iPhone 7 is still four months away from debuting, but a new picture “leaked” online appears to give us another early glimpse of the next-gen handset — suggesting once again that this might not be a significant redesign from the current iPhone 6s.

Check it out below.

Apple's next iPhone?
Apple’s next iPhone?

Circulating on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, the image apparently shows the back panel of a gold 4.7-inch iPhone 7.

While it overall looks very similar to the current generation iPhone 6s, however, there are a few notable differences: antenna lines which are moved from their current prominent position to the top and bottom of the handset, and a new module between the iSight camera and LED flash that could hint at a possible laser auto-focus system.

It should be pointed out that this image doesn’t look particularly legit — and given how easy it is to fake such things on Photoshop I wouldn’t necessarily put a whole lot of stock in it. The additional laser auto-focus system module (or whatever it might be) also doesn’t appear on other purported photos we’ve seen of the iPhone 7.

Still, it does back up some of the other rumors we’ve heard about Apple’s next-gen iPhone, so as a worst case scenario, it’s not a bad mockup of how Apple’s next iPhone may look.

Since Apple is apparently saving its best innovations for the 2017-era iPhone 7s, I’m not particularly enthused by what I’ve seen or heard about the iPhone 7 — although it appears that it may get a few more tweaks than we had initially figured.

Are you currently planning to get an iPhone 7? What would it take to make you shell out the money? Leave your comments below.

I’ve had every generation so far. I’ll get this one too.

    • Same. And the people who say “oh, it’s the same design, it’ll be rubbish” are probably the ones who buy a flowery case from eBay for £1.99 and cover it up anyway! It’ll sell like hot cakes as always.

  2. ha. on demand says:

No reason to buy. This holliday sezon will be disaster for Apple. Cook is out.

“This holliday sezon will be disaster for Apple.”

Yup. Apple is DOOMED… to continue being the most successful and profitable tech company in the world. ;-))

      • ha. on demand says:

Nobody said is “Doomed”, but how many times you can sell that same product?

      • Cold_dead_fingers says:

Do you know what same means? Every single iPhone has been different.

      • Jason Baroni says:

Yeah. Apple seems to be so doomed profiting 50 billions a quarter.

      • Demonstr8r says:

Quarterly revenue was 50 billion and net income (profit) was 10 billion, but yeah, certainly not doomed

      • Jason Baroni says:

Thanks. I was confused because I can’t even think of such an amaunt.

      • blady11 says:

Cook worries too much too much about fighting for political causes than running Apple. No real innovations, no truly new great products came from Apple in a while. Cook should resign or Apple becomes new Microsoft under Ballmer.

  3. Pug says:

Unless they bring out something special. I’ll be sticking to my iPhone 6 Plus. I’m getting sick of the same boring old phone every year.
Apple isn’t what it used to be.

    • My best guess, is that Apple has no clue what to do at this point and has completely lost the plot. Without Steve Jobs at the helm to actually direct the play, the company is slowly deteriorating. Sadly, my next phone and tablet will not be an iPhone or iPad.

      • ha. on demand says:

Unfortunately ;) iPad and iPhone is still best on a market. – I have android, iOS and Windows phones and tablets and I still prefer Apple products.

      • I completely understand. I think that’s why I’ve stuck around for so long, but there are so many features missing that would make life so much easier, which I’ve seen on other phones, and still Apple lags behind. It’s more the OS than the phone itself but with Apple they go hand in hand for the total user experience. Adding a few minor things every year that other phone have had for years or requiring an entirely new tablet to get side-by-side multitasking is getting a bit ridiculous.

      • Cold_dead_fingers says:

What did Apple do previously besides the best Apple products each year?

      • Fail to bring any really significant upgrades to iOS. Most stuff has been cosmetic and nothing really groundbreaking. Underwhelming performance specs, apps that reset themselves when left too long. The UI needs an overhaul.

      • roberto zanconato says:

I wish they would bring some cosmetic changes to iOS. For example, increasing the contrast of text and graphics. Maps is appalling. The low contrast makes it nearly impossible to view in any high ambient light. Also, using small size narrow line characters in light grey rather than black.

For iTunes, don’t even get me started. Classical music management is utter crap.

      • Demonstr8r says:

Quote: “Sadly, my ne t phone and tablet will not be an iPhone or iPad.”

Just curious, are your current phone and tablet both Apple products?

      • Yes, I have an Apple iPhone 6, and an iPad Air, and iPad Mini. Before that I had the iPhone 4s, 5, and 5s, and iPad 2, as well as an iPod Touch 5. I’ve been with Apple since iOS 4. Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually rooting for Apple to come up with some kind of killer overhaul but I’m not seeing it happening anytime soon. There needs to be more customizability (is that a word) in iOS. I’ve also got an iMac 27″, MacBook 17″, and Macbook Air (2015) and love them… they’re customizable.

      • Jim Culmac says:

so tired of Apple not giving us the simple ability to change the look and feel. AND a louder earpiece and speaker..

  4. Eurofag says:

As much as I’m an Apple lover if they don’t bring anything exciting with the 7, I’ll just get an SE for main phone and a Samsung S7 edge for playing around. I did hate Samsung’s “design” so far but this time they nailed it with that phone and I have to admit that design-wise it does beat the 6/6S/7(?).

  5. Dr. Rumack says:

I hated the current design language so much that I sold my 6S and got a SE, Seeing that the 7 will carry the same design language is disappointing

  6. Stetch says:

The design is decided on what case I choose. *Flies away*

  7. DJBabyBuster says:

Long as it has a headphones jack, I don’t care.

  8. Amateur says:

I wonder if Jobs left a memo for Cook to run the company to the ground after Jobs died. I am a long term Apple shareholder and frankly Cook is behind the curve every single time. He has more resources, talents and name recognition than any other company on Earth but he just have them sitting around.

  9. imtough says:

I’m going to save the $42/month on my AT&T bill and Luke and I will spend it on low-class hookers and blow.

  10. Richard Ludwig says:

Yep! Apple is totally doomed! Tim Cook is finished as CEO because their not making any profits and they have’t com out with anything new! This totally unverified leak that comes from nobody totally exemplifies it and forms my ever lasting opinion about the new phone before hearing anything official! #totalopinioninvestment

    /sarcasm

  11. Jurassic says:

“Are you currently planning to get an iPhone 7?”

Yes. Currently I have an iPhone 5s, which will be 3 years old when the iPhone 7 comes out this fall.

I’m looking forward to buying the iPhone 7 Plus, to use the larger screen as well as the dual lens camera (since I use my iPhone a lot for photos).

So far we only have rumours about the exterior style of the iPhone 7, but nothing about the important stuff inside. I don’t care if the style is similar to the iPhone 6/6s. I like the style, and it would be frivolous for Apple to change the style to something different, but no better, than last year’s style just for the sake of marketing (like Apple’s competitors do).

I have never been drawn to (for example) Samsung phones because they change the outside style every year, and disregard all of iPhone’s benefits which are not available in competitors’ phones.

As long as Apple keeps focusing on the internal hardware and software as they always have done, making the best phones available, I will continue buying and happily using iPhones.

  12. tjwolf says:

While I would prefer a new look, I’ll replace my iPhone 6 if Apple provides optical zoom and a 32gb base memory config. Together with the CPU, 3D Toch, and TouchId upgrades in the 6s, that’s plenty of new goodies for me.

  13. Frankie Tommy DeVito says:

I’ve had the original iPhone until 2010, then 4, 5, 6 Plus. Pretty psyched a year ago – looking forward to 7 Plus…but so far from everything I’ve seen and read there is no reason for me to upgrade to this years model. My 6 Plus is still in excellent condition and works perfectly fine. The 7S Plus/Pro (or 8..whatever it will be called, the 2017 / 10th anniversary model) SHOULD be much more appealing and worth spending on the upgrade.

  14. josephz2va says:

Does not matter to me as long as the accessories today can be used and we don’t have to spend an extra $500+ on new design accessories.

  15. plumbgray says:

    Ha ha!

  16. dbg says:

    Bring Scott Forstall as CEO

    • Demonstr8r says:

You must be one of the very few people still using iOS 6 out of sheer love for skeuomorphism

      • Dbg says:

Nope. iOS 9 and 6S Plus. I was never a big fan of skeumorphism, but this flat design is not a great piece design either.
I’d rather have skeumorphism and innovation that thinner upgrades and a flat design.
He’s also being kicked out of Apple like Steve, maybe there’s a parallel there

  17. Mathew says:

Very poorly written. This is not how to use however and commas: “While it overall looks very similar to the current generation iPhone 6s, however, there are a few notable differences:”

  18. Ugh. Thinking I’ll keep my 6+.

  19. David Kaplan says:

Weirdest thing about that mockup is the inclusion of the camera nipple. Thought that was leaving this year.

  20. Texas says:

You only have one opportunity to have the latest of any technology

  21. Mike Kay says:

once you put a case on it, the lens won’t matter

  22. Harlemite says:

??? Did we ALL fear that? No offense, but I can speak for myself in this area.

How about we wait until we actually see what the device can do before “we” start deciding things.

  23. Bryan Dobson says:

    Seriously?

This “confirms” what we’ve all heard and then you write “It should be pointed out that this image doesn’t look particularly legit — and given how easy it is to fake such things on Photoshop I wouldn’t necessarily put a whole lot of stock in it.”

So .. it confirms nothing at all?

This is the state of Apple journalism.

  24. Roman Pozler says:

Zoom the image. It`s definately fake. It must be. Camera gold frame is choppy and antenna lines are not perfectly lined both up and down in the corners. And fu** me in the ass if Apple`s biggest design ejaculation after 2 years is getting rid of two gdmn lines!!!
