The design of Google’s first-ever Nexus smartwatches may have just been revealed months ahead of schedule thanks to a new leaked image that claims to show the company’s wearable.

Google is planning to take on Apple Watch later this year with not one, but two smartwatches powered by its new Assistant technology. However, if this leak is the real deal, it doesn’t look like Apple has much to be worried about.

The first Google wearables look totally drab:

The image above isn’t an interpretation based on leaked info, but is actually a recreation of an internal image from Google, according to the folks at Android Police, which say they didn’t leak the original to protect their source’s anonymity.

Google codenamed the two devices as “Angelfish” and “Swordfish.” Both wearables will feature Google Assistant’s AI tech when they launch after the new Nexus phones later this year.

The larger of the two (Angelfish) will pack a few more features like heart rate monitor, GPS and LTE data that won’t be found on the smaller smartwatch. The clock face features an overwhelming amount of information thanks to Android Wear 2.0’s new customizable faces.

It’s unclear when Google plans to unveil the watches to the public. It will likely be after the company unveils the new Nexus phone it’s making, which isn’t expected to be announced until the end of 2016.

let’s see.. standard-looking watch lugs and bezel; letting me use my existing collection of watch straps and bands, without silly adapters. a round watch face. if that’s boring, my seiko diver collection would bore you to tears!

  2. iancahill says:

yeah I don’t think these are drab at all. They may still suck, but they look nice in the render. Judging them just because they are round like 99% of all other watches is silly.

  3. therealchiko says:

They certainly don’t look as drab as this article is making it seem. I’m a huge Apple fan but this Nexus Watch design looks more tolerable than the Apple Watch to me.

Sorry it doesn’t have all the cute shit like your Apple watch. Smartwatch should look just like a plain old watch. And then you customize a with your watch face and watch band. I’m sure they’ll make some pink ones for you

One cult’s “boring” is someone else’s elegant and simple. I rather like how it looks, personally, but then I prefer my accessories to compliment my outfit, not jarringly stand out because I spent a lot of money on it and I want to be sure everyone knows that.

How is the amount of information on that face ‘overwhelming’?

  7. igorsky says:

But…but…they’re round! Round watches are the best!

    • JayTee says:

How long until Apple comes out with a round watch? When/if they do, it will immediately outsell the squircle.

      • igorsky says:

Wanna bet that it’ll be the other way around as it usually is?

        Go do your homework, junior.

      • JayTee says:

What will be the other way around?

Apple used to outsell Android phones also. They won’t stick to squarish watches as long as they did small phones.

Regardless, are you capable of discussing the topic without getting emotional and name calling? If so, let’s continue.

Not boring, stylish. Underdesigned simplicity in a perfect form meets function execution.

  9. cooldoods says:

It would depend on factors and specs such as price, battery life, new features in Android Wear 2.0, and better compatibility with iOS devices. People who want a circular watch face would probably be interested already.

I personally find Apple watch as ugly and boring but that does not give me that courage of a narcissist to call it so.
If I ever go for a fad like that, it’ll be a round one. Again, it’s IMHO.

    • Michael says:

Sounds like you do have a lot of courage then! You just called it exactly that, “ugly and boring.”

      • Lard Vader says:

Haha. Yeah. Ideally I should be quiet all the time, lest I break a rule of some kind. But there’s a difference between a private opinion I’m sharing in response and some kind of online article that is really an attack on someone or something.

And I’m using Apple’s products, been a (moderate) fan of them since 1990s and my LCIII (which I dumped for lack of interoperability in a PC-dominated country). And admired the design and UX. And hated for closing the system. And the availability here, and prices… ;-)

I could probably say that a watch that looks like an iPhone strapped to your wrist is boring. How is that stylish? You’re comparing a render to a actual physical product. Ridiculous headline and article.

  12. enloquecido says:

Looks nice. Not many watches look worse than than the Apple watch.
