Vineyards in rural Spain might not be far enough away from murderous New York City loan sharks for safety, judging by the Land of Women trailer. The six-episode dramatic-comedy series starring Eva Longoria debuts Wednesday on Apple TV+. And it looks pretty fun.
Update: Apple TV+ released the first two episodes, or “chapters,” of Land of Woman today. Early reviews call it “winning,” a “feel-good drama” and a “palatable comfort-food family portrait.”
Land of Women trailer features ‘girls’ trip’ to Spain — on the run from loan sharks
The new Apple TV+ series Land of Women comes to us via award-winning author Sandra Barneda’s bestselling novel La tierra de las mujeres. The series, much of it in Spanish with subtitles, stars Eva Longoria alongside legendary Spanish actress Carmen Maura, newcomer Victoria Bazúa and Santiago Cabrera.
To a soundtrack of upbeat Latin music, the entertaining trailer shows Longoria’s character at a big party mistaking dangerous loan sharks her husband ran afoul of for caterers. She asked what she owes them. They say $50 million. So, at her sheepish husband’s urging, she ends up grabbing her mother and daughter in a headlong flight to rural northern Spain to avoid the thugs’ wrath. Though she doesn’t explain any of that to the other two women, describing it instead as a “girls’ trip.” And that doesn’t work out so well.
Here’s how the streamer describes the series:
Land of Women is a dramedy starring Longoria as Gala, a well-to-do New Yorker who has her life turned upside down when her husband fails to repay a debt to the wrong people. With dangerous criminals searching for her family and now vanished husband, Gala is forced to leave the city with her aging mother Julia (Maura) and teenage daughter Kate (Bazúa) to her mother’s hometown in northern Spain — a place that Julia fled 50 years ago — to start life anew and hope their identities remain hidden. But gossip in the charming wine town quickly spreads, unraveling their deepest family secrets and truths.
