iPhone 7 Plus dominates Google’s Pixel XL in speed test

Google’s new smartphone, the Pixel XL, can’t match the iPhone 7 Plus when it comes real-world speed.

In a new speed test pitting the mighty iPhone 7 Plus against Google’s handset, the Pixel XL gets absolutely stomped, despite having more RAM and the latest SnapDragon 821 processor.

Watch the iPhone 7 kill the Pixel XL:

To see how fast the two phones perform in real-life scenarios, PhoneBuff made the Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus open a number of apps, then went back through and reopened the apps.

More RAM, less speed

Pixel XL managed to open a couple of apps slightly faster than the iPhone 7 Plus, but Apple’s device was much faster overall. It nearly lapped the Pixel XL by opening all the apps twice in just 1:55, while the Pixel XL barely finished opening the first round of apps in 1:47.

To make matters worse, the Pixel XL isn’t much faster than the Galaxy Note 7 that Samsung had to recall.

Some evidence indicates Google may have spent only nine months developing the Pixel XL. If true, that lightning-fast development cycle might explain why the device’s memory management and speed is so bad. And why Apple’s software and hardware integration is so underrated.

    Android = FAIL

  2. Adam Fisch says:

Dollar shave club reads take as long as an Android phone to run a speed test.

  3. TeeJay2000 says:

That is just sad. Maybe the Pixel needs a higher voltage battery. /s

don’t mentioning that android has almost no security at all, basic all its a good system for kids who don’t care abut security and like to customize their home screen

    • Smokeypwns says:

Stock android is just as secure as iOS as long as you only install apps from the play store. Name time Google has sold users credentials.

      • leart says:

no that’s what you think, followed tons of security researchers and they had one common conclusion, android it’s not safe and it will never be.. it’s a open source.. one software for 1500 different devices…

      • Smokeypwns says:

Name one security flaw that on the latest version of android that doesn’t include installing apps from outside the play store.

      • leart says:

        use google

      • Smokeypwns says:

I did and there do seem to be any.

      • leart says:

well that’s fine, I’m not trying to convince you to don’t use android, if you like it enjoy

    • Jean-Mouloud says:

Yeah right your credentials are safer on an iPhone.

okay, the why the hell all artist, politicians, ritch persons, billionaires, formula one drivers, actors, and don’t remember all, ARE USING APPLE?
or they are all dumb? and you smart ?

      • Virgil says:

I do not believe that every single artist (50% of musicians are on android, 46% on apple) politician (Obama loves Blackberry, which is far more secure then either android or apple) rich person (trump uses a samsung) f1 drivers (more drivers use Blackberry) actors ( seems to be pretty even split) are all using only apple. you have shaped the rest of the world to your own bias.

1st quarter of this year android was 78% market share to apples 17.9%. the numbers are right there. less then 20% of people overall use iOS

      • leart says:

are you ok? no if you just need to talk, talk with yourself lol

      • leart says:

you look lost, there is a web pages for your kind of people . cult of android, don’t waste your energy here.. ah and just fuck you and your fucking disgusting android device

Don’t forget iOS is also operating with encryption on and the pixel with encrutption off (unless they turned it on in the test).

  6. Jason Mangano says:

These tests are pointless. Apple has always had better optimization that’s all this proves. Developers bring an application to Apple then port it to Android. This is why games will never open as quick on Android.

    • leart says:

good point .. never understand why developers port the major games/apps to android they never get profit for that since no one pay for apps in android.. probably is Google paying developers to do so lol

  7. Grayson says:

I love my iPhone 7 Plus, but that test is stupid as hell. It’s completely dependent on which apps are used and how well they are optimized for each platform. The first four or five apps opened faster on the Pixel. Had the test ended there the result would have been the opposite. I’m sure you could find 10 apps that run faster on the Pixel or 10 that run faster on the iPhone. You can get whatever result you want depending on the apps you choose. I played with a Pixel in Verizon the other day and it felt just as fast as the iPhone 7 in real world use. You should pick your device based on which ecosystem you prefer, not a stupid speed test like this that can be manipulated to give any result.

    • leart says:

well can tell just one thing for sure, the multitasking in iOS is just incredible .. you can open 20 apps and safari pages and they will not close for a good time, instead in Android they will lag after the 3-5 apps

      • Jean-Mouloud says:

You haven’t used Android in the past 3 years, have you?
And even back then, probably a low-end one…

      • leart says:

I’m a senior designer and don’t have budget problems, obviously I’m NOT using android, my choice since 2012 after tried android first.
now don’t tell me to try latest android coz I have already tried.. the look like retarded copy of iOS on everything
now this is my choice, I’m NOT trying to make you to think the same, have respect for others opinion, you have yours, it’s ok

      • Virgil says:

should try out the samsung s7 edge. smokes the iphone and is actually very well designed

      • leart says:

no i prefer the note 7 it really smokes

Great article to go with the best benchmark video I’ve ever seen.

By the way, I have an apple and an orange you can write about too. Hint: the apple wins that one as well, hands down.

Sarcasm aside, how that is a real world test is beyond me. I don’t open and switch apps like a madman under any circumstance. And why there is still this bad blood between the two completely different platforms is just as dumbfounding. Use whatever device that best suits your needs. You come off as immature and childish when you ridicule the other for their choice, Apple and Android fans alike. Apple makes solid devices, no doubt, however I happen to love my XL, and you won’t hear me call Apple a failure. But I think I’m in the wrong place to make that statement.

  9. Jean-Mouloud says:

That’s so funny how each side carefully chooses to show only this or that speed test that gets the result they want and advertises it as if it was the only golden source…
Pixel XL is fast. iPhone is fast. Depending on who what how they test, you sometimes believe one is faster, sometimes the other.
It’s all the same in the high-end category. What matters is what they can do.
And for that, the open source power has helped make a decision.

  10. Mark Anthony says:

Real world speed…if you’re 12… and open as many games as fast as possible…. Why don’t you create a speed test that’s business oriented apple fan boys. I have the pixel XL and it is just as fast as my buddies 7+ when creating email, surfing the web, buffering videos, annnnnd taking pictures and videos. Actually faster. Not to mention Google assistant is actually useful. Siri who?
