A new leak reiterates Apple’s plan to switch to under-display Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro models this year. The regular iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 will reportedly stick with displays featuring Dynamic Island at the top.

The leak also suggests that Apple plans to retain the same display sizes across its 2026 iPhone lineup, mirroring the current-generation models.

Under-display Face ID coming to iPhone 18 Pro

Rumors of Apple switching to under-display Face ID have been circulating for a few years now. But considering the technical challenges involved, it’s easy to see why the company has yet to pull this off.

With the iPhone 18 Pro this year, though, things might finally change. Chinese leaker DCS has shared the alleged display size and specifications of the entire iPhone 18 family and iPhone Air 2.

The regular iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 will supposedly stick to the same 6.27-inch and 6.55-inch 120Hz LTPO panels with Dynamic Island, respectively.

The bigger changes will apparently debut on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. While their display sizes and refresh rate will remain the same, both models will feature a “newly redesigned under-display cutout area (translated).”

Android phones already feature a punch-hole cutout

The leaker didn’t share further details on this front, but previous leaks have already given us a good idea of what to expect. Apple will purportedly move the Face ID sensors below the display, with the camera cutout moving to the left.

Most Android phones already feature a punch-hole cutout in the center for the camera. Apple seems to be jumping on the same design trend after debuting the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.

If Apple moves forward with the change, it would mark the first major redesign of the iPhone’s front in years.

Given the space constraints of the iPhone Air and the pricing considerations around the standard iPhone 18, it also makes sense for Apple to limit this design change to its Pro models.
