iPad 2 Games Look As Good As Xbox 360 Games On A 50-Inch HDTV

Check out this video of the iPad 2 playing Chair Entertainment’s Infinity Blade on a 50-inch LG HDTV running at 1080p, thanks to the new iPad HDMI adapter. That’s a ten-dollar game looking just as lurid and beautiful in high-definition as a $60 Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 game.

Here’s another video of Real Racing 2 HD in action on the same setup:

Touch Gen has more videos of iPad 2 games in action through the official HDMI adapter. Why Apple doesn’t just let the $99 AppleTV play apps through a paired iOS device is beyond me: they’d single handedly destroy Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft in the console games market with one swoop.

The iPad 2 games needs to look good on the iPad 2. If it requires a 50-inch HDTV to look good then it is not as good as Microsoft’s Xbox.

  2. Mike Rathjen says:

So a $700 device with awkward controls has graphics that look almost as good as a $250 device?

  3. Ken Liles says:

with a few games that $250 device is now a $700 device and ONLY plays a few games.
now the awkward part is a decent point that needs to be addressed IMHO

  4. Johnnsen says:

Also a handheld. The price of the device also doesn’t have much to do with how impressing it is. “My $10 dollar gameboy doesn’t look as good as the NGP, therefor the NGP isn’t impressive.”

  5. Johnnsen says:

Uh what? Who said it requires a 50 inch HDTV to look great? It requires a 50 inch HDTV to look like an 50 inch HDTV connected to an Xbox. Its obvious this was to compare both gadgets on the same screensetup.

It looks good, but who wants to play games for more than five minutes using the iPad as a controller??? You have two displays, and a very awkward playing interface. It is uncomfortable as a game controller on a big screen. What we need now is a bluetooth game controller that can be paired with the iPad 2 for gameplay. Then, the iPad can be the multi-functional book reader, web surfing, movie watching, calendar checking, and game-console brains of the operation, but you won’t have to awkwardly wield it.

As good as on Xbox360 ? You must be a really big fanboy to even state such a thing… they look good, but there is NO comparison.

  8. Trdevore says:

infinity blade looks good – pretty easy game to render. just 2 characters and not much going on. the racing game looks decent but not great. quite an awkward set up – why the hell would you want to do that in the first place…

“Why Apple doesn’t just let the z?290.48 AppleTV play apps through a paired iOS device is beyond me”

Wirelessly? It would cause massive lag…

  10. Ryan Thompson says:

If we look at the early Xbox 360 games ,then this is absolutely on par if not superior. Also, it depends on the game. Give dev’s some time with the new hardware, but it looks promising.
I think it’s apt to compare the two. The graphics are easily better than the Wii, and not as good as the PS3. What console would you compare it to?

  11. Momie says:

Look very respectable to me on a large hdtv for a multifaceted device. Love it! Another good reason to get one for each of my kids for their study, homework, music lesion, game play, and so on.

  14. Hampus says:

You mean like the wireless controllers used by the 360 and the PS3?
They use Bluetooth which the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad all have, not sure about the AppleTV though.

    Prettyimpressive.

a 499 dollar device with games that are 5-10 dollars max (also are only 4-500mb so they can be downloaded rather quickly ((and free if you jailbreak)) the touch controls are more interactive but I agree a controller must be developed by apple to control the games physically and they WILL dominate the gaming market (as they have with music, phones, tablets, personal computers. Also not 1 app has been updated yet to support the 9x faster ipad 2 graphics as it was just released 2 days ago. a 250 device with a game is 310 (and cannot be used for anything else other than games alone) the ipad has 70,000+ uses i.e. the app store.

  17. Kagedblack001 says:

yea the ngp will be way less be more powerful and have better games. and actual big boy game controls ipad 2 has nice graphics but it does not have the potential to be a real gaming device. sorry man

  18. besweeet says:

I don’t believe that this is actually at 1920×1080. There’s no way the iPad 2 can power that many pixels (1024×768 on the screen, and then 1920×1080 on the television). If anything, it’s 1024×768 on the HDTV. Scaling it up to 1080p won’t make it look any better.

In other words, that game isn’t being played at 1080p.

  19. m3kw says:

If Apple opens up the Bluetooth API enough, people may start porting bluetooth controllers to function with it, namely the PS3 6 axis controller.

  20. besweeet says:

Well, if you jailbreak, then you can. The Wiimote works great with jailbroken iDevices.

  21. Tim Bonsberg says:

I have to disagree, I admit the graphics are good, but id love to see this thing run games like CoD or Halo, it looks good running small games ie. only two characters and racing games are quite simple to render compared to FPS’s and to be honest, i dont think it could really compete with the hardcore markety without a controller/keyboard.

  22. Normanbluer says:

Wow totally amazing to this one the game and iphone

  23. bocajbee says:

hahahaha your joking right? This may be true with 360 games from 2005 but NO IPAD game can even come close to crysis 2, gears 3 and halo reach on 360.

  24. mikefw9 says:

False. The specs on Apple’s website specify the iPad2 does 1080p output on an hdtv. In other words it’s playing at 1080p.
