Why iOS 8 may seem slow even on modern devices

Are sluggish animations to blame for perceived iOS 8 slowdown?

Accusations that iOS 8 is slower than Apple’s previous mobile operating systems have circulated since the software debuted in 2014. Although it works great most of the time on my iPhone 6 Plus, you don’t have to look far to find people complaining that the latest version of iOS slows down to a sluggish crawl.

From hard resets to turning on the “reduce motion” option under Accessibility, numerous solutions can be employed to keep iOS 8 running at a good clip. One explanation for iOS 8 feeling slower than its predecessors, however, is that (much like iOS 7) its system animations take too long to complete, thereby making the interface feel slower than it should.

So peeved is Omni developer William Van Hecke that he recently compared the animation speeds in a YouTube video. Chalk it up to unnecessary nitpicking if you want, but when you see iOS 3 reacting considerably quicker than iOS 8, it definitely makes you think Apple could make improvements.

Check out the video below:

One point up for debate is Van Hecke’s argument that earlier iOS animations were interruptible. It could simply be that older animations ended more quickly, while iOS 8 ones are drawn out. It does have a noticeable impact on how slow iOS 8 appears to be, however, regardless of whether this is the case for computational reasons related to processor speeds, etc.

Van Hecke says he’s filed the issue with Apple’s bug reporter, so we’ll have to wait and see if it gets fixed in a future iOS 8 update or perhaps iOS 9. Is this something you’ve personally noticed with iOS 8? Leave your comments in the box below.

That’s going to bug me now that I know about it.

I also find iOS8 slow on my 6Plus but for me the most noticeable thing is how it regularly stutters when scrolling.

I do find it rather irritating at times.

    Who needs animations anyways?

iOS has been broken ever since Apple fired Scott Forstal. Will never be the same unfortunately…

Oh really? Do tell why? It’s the truth man. Yeah Forstals concepts were boring but at least the OS worked fluidly. It has not been the same since Ive’s hardware team took over the software reaponsibilities. Hardware guys are not software guys and vice versa. They broke a lot of shit in later versions of iOS that used to work flawlessly before.

What is the OS in the gif above?!

Yes it’s too slow it hangs in between launching a app.i got iOS6 on my iPad and iOS8 on my iPhone six and the reason why I don’t update cause I hate it it’s too slow the interface is good but the power not good maybe chooser is not enough to handle it

I just kick all the apps out to resolve that problem.

  9. @winmaciek says:

You can make turning on multitasking significantly faster. Just turn off three-push on home button in accessibility.

Less features, less APIs = faster but less powerful..

    Simple solution: JB tweak NoSlowAnimations.
