With every new iOS beta, we get our first glimpse into the future of Apple’s iOS devices, and iOS 5 Beta 1 is no exception.
TUAW notes that in USB config giles found in the iOS 5 beta, there are clear references to iPad 3,1 and iPad 3,2. The iPad 2 is indicated in the same files as iPad 2,1 (WiFi), iPad 2,2 (GSM) and iPad 2,3 (CDMA), so the existence of only two iPad 3’s seems to suggest that GSM and CDMA flavors will be united into one device when it debuts next year.
Strangely, the USB device files don’t seem to reference any new iPod Touches, which is strange, since we’re expecting them in September. TUAW suggests that Apple could add them later this summer, but why would the iPad 3 (expected early 2012) have its config files included and the iPod Touch left out?

There’s an iPad 3? That will make Samsung’s lawyers happy.. :P
This article is okay, but John brownlee, you are a fanboy piece. you suck badly
Haha brilliant
typo
“that in USB config giles found”
iPad 3 needs to have LTE…Â
Enough with 3G crap.Â
Will I be the first one to say it?!?!? Â It sounds to me that there will be 2 models of iPhone. Â WITH and WITHOUT phone contract. Â No more iPod, which is probably why apple shifted the iPhone to the iPod’s product cycle. Â
I sound ridiculous now, but if Steve says it in a few months, I’m going to laugh at all you nay-sayers.
Sorry, I meant phone contract (parts, or otherwise). Â Like the iPad has 3G as an option.
You DO realize this site is called “Cult of Mac” right?Â
Dan, I take it you are in the USA as in the UK and other countries Apple have released the GSM phone contract free. It’s the same model but the serial number in the Big Apple Database says if it was bought contract free from Apple or subsided from a Carrier.

so what do we call an iPhone that cannot make phone calls? (without contract)
iUnPhone?
So like an iPhone without the cell radios? An iPhone Wifi so to speak or… Â an iPod Touch. The rear camera isn’t as good in an iPod Touch though.
This is not a comment on your post per say, but in general, these past few days CoM has started this highly irritating practice of jurking the page you’re reading, right under your eyes, to those tiny 1mm X 1mm Facebook monuments of various people following the post. Seriously guys ! Is that what people read your posts for? To see their own mugs every time they post a comment? I think of CoM people to be a lot more decent bunch of Mac/Apple experts who I enjoy reading.
I think it’s purposely introduced to keep people on their toes and the hype alive.
while people around the world still patiently waiting for the restock or shipment of ipad2…….by the time they received it, apple announced ipad3~~~horrible nightmare……then you will be looking to sell out your ipad2 to get an ipad 3…..oh gadjet lover~~~
No more iPod? Can I have some of what you’re smoking there, bro?
ipad nano??
you beat me to that – i think the ipod touch will be the cheaper iphone that’s been rumoured and it might use VOIP instead. no 3g or data, just wifi
it doesn’t need LTE, as it is its not even employed properly around US, its a battery drainer, the current chipsets don’t fallback onto 3g. PLUS, most of the world don’t have LTE yet so its useless.
This is exactly my point… but what am I smoking? Â The iPhone (in the states) used to be $100 more expensive than the iPod counterpart [we’re only talking about touches]. Â Now, the 32gig models are the same* (with 2 year contract on the iPhone). Â What happens if they were to roll out the new model of IPhone for less than an iPod? Â So, do they roll out a less expensive product to take over the market? Â Like a 16gig iPhone for $99, and 32gig for $199… but then who would buy the iPod for $100 more. Â People don’t really value the phone service contract to be worth $400… so offer an iPhone for cheap without cell service. Â If the cellular radios really cost about $400 (retail after markup), then take the hit, and provide the phone without the cellular radios.Â
Ta-Da!

Hey, Look at that (Sorry Cult, but your related story didn’t spill out that the name “iPod” wasn’t being used).Â
So, if they’re killing off the “Pod”… could it be that there will be an iPhone and wifiPhone?
If you put a couple components on the iPod, it’s a Phone afterall… VOIP, iCall (trademarked by another company that could conceivably be bought out), whatever you want to call it.
an ipod touch…
