Meta may finally launch an Instagram app for the iPad. Reportedly, the company plans to launch a dedicated iPadOS app to capitalize on the current situation surrounding TikTok.

The move could help further drive Instagram adoption among iPhone and iPad users.

Will Instagram finally do it?

Despite the iPad’s popularity, Meta never launched an official Instagram app for the platform. In 2022, Instagram head Adam Mosseri dashed all hopes of a native iPad app, saying there’s “not a big enough group of people to be a priority.” A year later, he noted that there are “only so many people working at Instagram, so we’ve got to pick the most important things to do to improve Instagram at any given moment.”

You can install and use Instagram for iPhone on your iPad. But it delivers a sub-par experience, with a poor layout. And blowing it up to 2x only makes matters worse. Meta may have finally shifted its position on bringing Instagram to the iPad. According to The Information, an insider at Instagram says that a native iPad app has entered development.

Instagram wants to capitalize on TikTok’s uncertain future

The move comes amidst the turmoil that TikTok finds itself in. Meta hopes to take advantage of the situation and increase user engagement on its platform. Perhaps 15 years after the first iPad launched, Instagram may have finally realized the value of having a native tablet-optimized app.

There’s no word in the report on when Instagram will officially launch its iPad app. Alongside this, the company is also working on a new Edits app. It will provide more feature-rich video editing tools to creators, right on their phone. Instagram has been testing the app for some time, with a public release due later this month.
