It took far longer than necessary, but Meta introduced on Wednesday an Instagram application that takes advantage of the iPad’s large screen.
Meta emphasizes the new app’s ability to play Reels — short videos that collectively rack up billions of views a day.
Instagram for iPad, at last!
Instagram launched in 2010, and so did the original iPad. But Meta stubbornly refused to bring the two together, even though an iPhone app was available from the beginning. Until now, those using the hugely popular video-sharing service on an iPad had to choose between an iPhone version that couldn’t expand to fill the tablet’s whole screen, or turn to the web version of the service.
That’s no longer true. A native Instagram app for iPad launched Wednesday.
“We’re excited to announce we’re bringing Instagram to iPad,” Meta said in a blog post. “People have asked for this for a while, and we’ve taken the time to design an experience that optimizes your favorite parts of Instagram for a bigger screen.”
As noted, the emphasis is on Reels.“When you open the app, you’ll drop into Reels, so you can get the entertaining content you love on a bigger screen,” said the developer.
But there’s also a new Following tab in the iPad application intended to help users not miss updates from their favorite accounts.
