iCloud Drive comes to Windows before the Mac

Steve Jobs once said that iTunes on Windows was like giving someone ice water in hell. Now Windows users are getting the latest version of iCloud before the Mac faithful.

Apple has already rolled out iCloud Drive, its new cloud filesystem for iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, on Windows. Mac users won’t get iCloud Drive until Yosemite’s rumored launch in October.

On Windows, iCloud Drive is available as its own folder for managing documents stored in the cloud. According to Ars Technica, it works largely the same as iCloud Drive on Apple’s software, although Windows users can’t use iCloud Keychain for web passwords or Find My iPhone. Notes data isn’t accessible either, though it is available from iCloud.com.

Before upgrading to iOS 8, we cautioned to not enable iCloud Drive because it is only accessible in OS X Yosemite. Unless you’re on the public or private developer beta of Yosemite, your Mac can’t use iCloud Drive yet.

iCloud for Windows is a free download from Apple’s website.

If you are running Yosemite beta 3, the icloud drive is there. But photos in my icloud are not? Hmph

You would think that Apple would want Mavericks users to be able to use Drive as well. I thought that the 10.9.5 update would have had it for sure seeing that it came the next day after the release of iOS 8.

There are a lot of people that aren’t going to want to update to Yosemite straight away.

There’s no reason to enable it on Mavericks. Any machine that was capable of running Mavericks is capable of running Yosemite and it costs zero dollars. I know there are some that don’t want to update, but those people need to just deal with change and make the move.

Not at all. Every computer that can run Mavericks can run Yosemite. And with it being free what they will want is everyone upgrading.

I’ve had iCloud Drive since September, sorry windows you didn’t win the race.
