Here’s how much iPhone 6s will cost around the world

Apple raked in the cash last quarter.
Feel sorry for the Apple fans of France.

Just because you can buy the same model of iPhone 6s all over the world doesn’t mean that you’ll be paying the same for it.

When international prices are converted into U.S. dollars, some markets pay up to 30 percent more for the basic 16GB iPhone 6s than customers in the United States.

The country being hit the hardest? France, due to the domestic weakening of the Euro over the past twelve months. Sacré bleu, indeed!

Heading
The iPhone 6s may work the same wherever you go, but it sure doesn’t cost the same.

Of course, it’s a bit more complex than this chart makes it seem. Salaries vary massively around the world, so the iPhone as a percentage of average wages is an interesting factoid not touched on here.

Additionally, in the U.S. there are sales taxes to consider, which vary by state. In New York, for instance, there’s an 8.875 percent hike, although other states have no sales tax at all.

It’s also worth noting that Apple isn’t making 30 percent more for its iPhones in France, since import taxes account for a large part of the extra price.

Still, it’s a fascinating glimpse a how the iPhone varies just depending on where you buy it. It’s surely going to be a particularly hard pill to swallow in parts of Europe, where the weakening of the Euro means customers are paying $40 more for the iPhone 6s than they were for the iPhone 6 this time last year — despite Apple making a big point of not changing the prices.

Where in the world do you live, and how does the local cost of the iPhone factor in on your buying decision?

The cost of an iPhone in Canada has gone up astronomically since I bought my iPhone 6 64 GB on launch day (sept 19) of last year. Now a 16gb 6S costs 400$ (!!!) for the 16gb ON contract which not to mention now START at 60-70$!! SEVENTY DOLLARS PER MONTH, AND THAT’S BEFORE DATA, with one GB of data on most carriers it’s 80$. The prices have gone up astronomically, and we don’t have any carrier competition since all three of our major telecoms sell and deal with the same prices.

Price hike for apple music in the UK is even bigger. At the current exchange rate we would pay $15.43 for the basic service. Over the year that adds up.

I’ve been on the S upgrade cycle since the 3GS. Unfortunately, I think I will be skipping version 6 and hope the Canadian dollar bounces back somewhat.

I would like a good explanation why it cost double for an iPhone on contract in Canada.

if i remember correctly iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 was sold at 2594$ on launch day on Maldives ._.
    and was sold out ….

  6. In Brazil it’s going to be the worst its ever been. Take a close look back in December, the base model will be almost double the 649 US bucks.

Same old story… Usually international values of items are priced differently because:

    1. Currency fluctuations – there’s always a hedge against changes to avoid re-pricing often
    2. Taxes – each region/state/country/city may impose varying amounts of tax that is either visible and obvious or in the background and not obvious
    3. Warranty – the time and coverage of a warranty directly affects price, so companies charge more for markets where the warranty has to cover more. The consumer will always pay that price.
    4. Return period – each market has a different return period expectation and what’s allowed for restocking fees, etc.
    5. Market size – the more an item sells, and the more profitable, the more likely there are to be different prices
    6. Elasticity of demand – related to #5 and what the market will bear

These stories always make it appear that it’s cheaper at ABC place but not DEF but always fail to tell the whole story. People feel righteously indignant but are actually ignorant because they’re not comparing equivalents.

  8. I think in some countries, government import taxes play a large part of price differences. We pay less for the phone in the U.S., that is true. However, we also pay a lot more for the monthly service fees to our carriers, than many other countries. So, you pay more now, or you pay more over time. Either way, smartphones are expensive world wide. You could save a bit on the purchase price and get a used iPhone or an Android phone, I guess. What fun would that be though?

Here in Mexico we pay around 25% more than the US price, if I wanted to buy an iPhone 6 Plus 64GB, instead of $749 I will be spending around $950 USD, (taxes included) which is crazy! Maybe I will get the 6 once the price drops since the 6S is probably going to get more expensive than the current 6 :(

  10. Alexander Forrest says:

Is this including or excluding sales tax?

In Europe it’s about 20% of the quoted price, and in the US its added after the fact. Usually around 7% extra. That would account for the difference in price.

For a french people like me studying in Alberta – Canada it costs me (in Euros) for the iPhone 6s 64GO:
    Canada (based on 5%tax): 720€
    US(based on 5%tax): 710€
    France: 859€

So wherever in North-America it’s much more advantageous :D

Might as well go on vacation to a cheaper country and buy it while you’re there (Mexico/US).
