Google has begun internally testing a dedicated Gemini app for macOS. While the company continues to improve its AI tool almost every other week, the lack of a native Mac app limits its full potential.
A dedicated app will make Gemini more accessible and better integrated into everyday workflows on macOS.
Google begins testing Gemini’s Mac app
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude both offer dedicated macOS apps. This allows them to offer several advanced features, including integrating with other Mac apps, enabling more complex AI-assisted workflows.
Bloomberg reports that Google has seeded an early version of the Gemini for Mac app to private beta testers. The initial build does not include all the Gemini features, but that should change by the time the app is ready for public release.
“Google is asking testers to try out features for generating images, video, music, tables and charts, as well as mathematics and information analysis. The app also can search web-based information and go through past conversations. It offers personalization and can analyze uploaded media documents,” says the report.
Without a dedicated Mac app, the only way to access Gemini is through the web. That adds an extra layer of friction, especially when uploading documents or files.
Mac app will supercharge the Gemini experience
A dedicated Mac app would also allow Google to introduce more advanced features. Similar to how ChatGPT can connect with apps on macOS, Gemini is working on a “Desktop Intelligence” feature. It will allow the AI tool to understand what other Mac apps are doing and provide more context-aware assistance.
“When you enable apps for Desktop Intelligence you are enabling Gemini to see what you see (such as screen context) and pull content directly from these apps to improve and personalize your experience only when Gemini is in use,” says a comment in the app’s code.
From a design standpoint, the Gemini for Mac app looks similar to the iPhone and iPad app.
There’s no clear timeline for when Google will release a dedicated Gemini app for macOS. Google I/O is scheduled for May 19–20, an announcement around that time seems likely.
