Google is giving Google Maps navigation its biggest upgrade in a decade. Thanks to deep Gemini integration, the way you use Google Maps will forever change with this update.
At the center of the update is a new Immersive Navigation view, which replaces the traditional map with a vivid, interactive 3D experience.
Google Maps’ biggest navigation upgrade in years is here
Google has been integrating Gemini into its various products and services for a better experience. It first added Gemini to Google Maps in November 2025, providing access to a smart co-passenger that can proactively notify you of traffic disruptions or find a fuel stop.
Now, Google is further leveraging Gemini’s spatial understanding and Street View imagery for Immersive Navigation in Google Maps. It introduces an interactive 3D navigation view with richer details and smarter zoom levels.
Voice guidance is also more natural. On-screen visual cues will further help make turns and lane changes easier to follow.
“So if you’re getting off the highway in two exits, you’ll hear, “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South,” alongside helpful visuals that clearly highlight your next step,” says Google in its announcement.

When taking alternate routes, Maps will now inform you about the tradeoffs. Plus, you will get real-time alerts for any issues along your route, like accidents or road construction.
Before you start navigating, you can preview your destination and its surroundings using Street View imagery — and even get recommendations on where to park. As you get closer, Maps highlights the building’s entrance, nearby parking spots and the correct side of the street you must be on.
Immersive Navigation is rolling out in the US for now. It will be available across compatible iOS, Android, CarPlay, and Android Auto devices in the “coming months.”
Ask Maps lets you talk to Google Maps
Alongside the navigation upgrade, Google Maps is getting a new Gemini-powered Ask Maps feature. Powered by Gemini, it enables you to ask for things in natural language. So, like “My phone is dying — where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”
Ask Maps recommendations are personalized based on your profile. You can even use the feature to directly make restaurant bookings.
The feature is rolling out in the US and India on Android and iOS.
