Apple will replace its much-maligned (and quickly abandoned) FineWoven material for iPhone cases with a new synthetic fabric for the iPhone 17 lineup, according to a new leak Tuesday. And on Wednesday a new name — “TechWoven” — and images of Apple packaging came to light. The new MagSafe cases might feature a cross-body strap and lanyard support, too

The new material appears to be Apple’s next attempt to create a leather alternative for iPhone cases, following the company’s 2023 decision to eliminate leather products from its lineup for environmental reasons. The resulting FineWoven came under heavy fire from users for poor durability and its tendency to show wear quickly.

The leaker Majin Bu followed up on his Tuesday post with a post Wednesday indicating the name “TechWoven” and showing images of Apple product boxes for the MagSafe cases.. See below.

TechWoven: Apple FineWoven replacement for iPhone 17 cases takes a more technical approach

Apple’s new synthetic TechWoven fabric will feature a more “technical” design aesthetic compared to FineWoven’s luxury positioning (which didn’t really fly with users after its 2023 introduction), according to leaker Majin Bu. Another sustainable replacement for leather, the new TechWoven material appears to have a more visible texture, with enhanced resistance to scratches and daily wear. That would address primary complaints users had with FineWoven cases.

The fabric provides a rubbery, grippy texture designed to improve phone handling and reduce drops, the leaker said. While a new focus on practicality might sacrifice some premium feel, the change appears aimed at solving FineWoven’s durability problems.

Additional features and options

Majin Bu said Tuesday the new cases are expected to launch in four matte colors: green, orange, blue and purple. But his Wednesday post took away orange and added black and brown, for a total of five colors.

Beyond the synthetic fabric cases, Apple might introduce what Majin Bu calls “Liquid Glass” cases, though details about this option remain unclear. These could be a new version of Apple’s existing clear cases or a made from an entirely different material.

The latest leak also reiterates previous rumors about iPhone 17 cases featuring an integrated lanyard loop, similar to the practical carrying solution found on AirPods Pro 2 cases. This addition would allow users to wear their phone on their wrist or attach it to bags for secure carrying.

Track record and timing

It’s worth noting Majin Bu’s mixed reputation for accuracy, though the leaker occasionally provides correct information about Apple products. The timing of this leak, coming roughly three weeks before Apple’s expected September announcement, is earlier than typical case material reveals.

Given widespread user dissatisfaction with FineWoven, a replacement material for iPhone cases seems likely. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 lineup at an event likely scheduled for September 8 or 9.
