If you watched the most recent Mac media event, you already got a preview of Final Cut X — thanks to the on-stage demo showing how it worked in conjunction with the MacBook Pro’s new Touch Bar. But there’s a whole lot more to the Final Cut Pro 10.3 update than that.

To check out what you’ll find in the latest update for Apple’s video-editing software, check out our comprehensive video below.

What’s new?

As you can see from the video, some non-Touch Bar updates include a redesigned user interface, which is a whole lot cleaner, darker and flatter than previously — which has the effect of making the app a lot more functional than previously, since the last thing you want is to be distracted from your media viewer when editing.

The 10.3 update also introduces the ability to group audio into “lanes”, which acts a lot more like traditional editing packages such as Premiere or Avid, while still offering the dynamic responsiveness that FCPX is designed for.

On top of this is an increased of variety of options for second screen workflows and custom workspaces — which, again, makes Final Cut Pro 10.3 one of the best updates in recent memory.

My only question – Has finally FC returned to the multiple-display-friendly days of the past or is Apple’s jones for laptops still barring users from having a palette monitor?
When they killed the freely dockable palettes with the upgrade from FCP to iMovie Pro (which they did with Motion, as well) it shot my productivity straight to blazes. Having to burrow down, up and sideways through nested tabs while I have a second 27″ monitor sitting right there is madness.
I’ve been using Premiere for years now and the restrictions from the drastic UI downgrade for Motion were even worse. It instantly changed from my favorite app to being non-usable. Apple needs to put down the hookah long enough to recognize that being able to work in a fast and efficient fashion is mission-critical. In some situations every single second counts.

Ste, is this really “everything new”? I think you need to spend less time in PP if you want to accurately inform readers on FCP. Disappointing video. I normally find your work to be really good…this, not so much.

I would love to know very much on whats new, specifically on transcoding, auto saving, rendering and exporting, i often found my self very limited in the control of how final cut x handles work work especially when importing media. My other issue is with limited exporting formats and codec, i have a feeling they have a long way to go in trying to bring it back to what it used to be.

No, nothing has changed in any regard to what you’ve asked. If you often use ‘Roles’ in your day-to-day editing, you might be pleasantly surprised by what you see.

Otherwise, very few useful changes. I use FCP because that is what my employer has chosen to edit on. I have FCPX since July 2015 and this new update has done nothing to improve my workflow or enhance my editing. If anything, this update makes my daily routine a little more difficult as they seem to have changed things around for no apparent reason.

This update is nothing more than a facelift with a few changes to give the impression that they still care about the product.

At this point they need to not just make a nice incremental upgrade.

They need to be better than Premiere.
