If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises yet, buy a ticket for the soonest IMAX showing near you and prepare to have your mind blown. Ticket sales are strong, and many are calling this latest Batman movie the best yet.

Christopher Nolan, the man who wrote and directed the last three Batman films, is a fascinating character. The Brit is at the top of his game and considered the most bankable director in Hollywood, yet he doesn’t own a cell phone or even use email! In a recent interview, Nolan poo-pooed Apple’s Siri, genuinely asking the question, “What’s the purpose of that?”

While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan explained why he has never owned a cell phone or used email. He thinks that face-to-face communication is more efficient and effective, and he notes that he’s always around someone else who has a phone if he really needs it. From a very basic point of view, he does have a point:

“The idea that you’re holding in your hand a device that will actually let you speak to another human being and instead of using it for that, you type some silly little message and send a one-way communication — it’s a very odd step backwards in communication terms.,” he said.

Don’t even try explaining Siri or that you can speak into an iPhone and have the words translated to text.

“Really?” he said, looking bewildered. “What’s the purpose of that?”

Kind of ironic that his movies feature all kinds of crazy, futuristic tech, and he doesn’t use one today’s most common devices—a smartphone— himself.

What a weirdo. Oh well, he gets a pass for directing the best trilogy of all time.

I don’t get his movies. The whole Batman trilogy was terrible [IMO], and Christian Bale is a horrible actor.

No, siri doesn’t get HIM – because Siri sucks.

He should try Google’s new Voice Search +Google Now. Now THAT’S real A.I.

Back in the day we didn’t need a cellphone nor smartphone. I get Nolan’s point.

Frankly, I don’t get Siri either. It’s just a gimmick.

  7. AppleDApp says:

If he doesn’t use email or a phone how does he coordinate meeting with actors and producers to shoot his movies?

Samsung people should stay away from these mac forums, with their cheap imitations. At least Microsoft tried to create something different this time around and not just make apple knock off products. As for nolan I get him, he is not dizzying apple he is just not a mobile tech fan. I do think we are loosing human interaction as well, I love all my iphones but I hate texting with a passion so I get him.

Honestly, I agree about Siri. “She” doesn’t work most of the time, and is just generally, unnecessary. I don’t understand why he’s so reluctant to adopt email use… or even a dumbphone! Why’s he against dumbphones/feature-phones? Does he not use phones at home either? Hell, my grandmother has gmail and a cell phone.

I agree, Siri is a waste of space
