Apple TV+ calls it "gritty" repeatedly, and it really seems to be.

Apple TV+ trots out the word “gritty” in press materials that go with its gripping new trailer for Berlin ER, the upcoming German-language hospital drama formerly known as Krank Berlin. And for the first time, PR for the show seems to actually live up to that description.

The trailer makes the new series look raw, with a visceral realism about the harsh realities of an inner-city hospital that makes me want to watch it, even if I have to use subtitles (or maybe, ugh, dubbed English). The eight-episode series starts streaming on Apple TV+ February 26.

Apple TV+ trailer for drama series Berlin ER brings the grit

So when Apple TV+ first nabbed this German-language hospital drama, it went by its German name, tied to the hospital’s nickname: Krank Berlin. Now, for American streamers, it’s called Berlin ER. And judging by the trailer, the show is going to bring complex and fast-paced emergency-room reality to your screen. After all, the show comes from former emergency room physician Samuel Jefferson, along with co-creator Viktor Jakovleski. It stars Haley Louise Jones (Dear Child, Paradise) and Slavko Popadić (Crooks), Apple TV+ said.

Here’s the streamer’s description:

Managing a chaotic emergency room in the toughest and most overcrowded hospital in Berlin is no small task for the young Dr. Parker (Jones), who is seeking a fresh start in the big city after her private life implodes in Munich. When she tries to implement necessary reforms, Parker is confronted with resistance from the underpaid, ill-equipped and chronically fatigued hospital staff who only survive with an indispensable dose of black humor. But in the face of an increasingly merciless health care system, the battered team must put aside their differences and pull together to save lives.

Hell, you had me at “black humor.” Throw in a few life-and-death moments and I might get hooked.

In addition to Jones and Popadić, Berlin ER stars Şafak Şengül (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Aram Tafreshian (Dogs of Berlin), Samirah Breuer (The Gryphon), Bernhard Schütz (Barbarians), Peter Lohmeyer (I Don’t Work Here) and Benjamin Radjaipour (No Hard Feelings).

ZDFneo produces the show for Apple TV+, on behalf of Violet Pictures and Real Film Berlin. Executive producers: Alexis von Wittgenstein (Oktoberfest: Beer & Blood) and Real Film’s Emmy Award-nominated Henning Kamm (Unorthodox). Alex Schaad (Skin Deep) and Fabian Möhrke (Eichwald, MdB) direct the show.
