Apple has reportedly ramped up both chip and component orders for the Apple Watch Series 2, with monthly shipment orders for August and September both surpassing two million units.
Provided order numbers remain at this level, it could suggest the Apple Watch Series 2 will sell double what Apple’s first-gen Apple Watch managed, with year one sales reported to total 12 million units.
This would be a great achievement for Apple, in line with the kind of boost the iPhone managed in its second-generation version way back in 2008. Looking at year-by-year iPhone numbers from 2007 to the present day, sales almost doubled each year from 2008 (the first full year the handsets were available) until 2012.
Previously we had heard that Apple not expecting a big sales bump for the Apple Watch Series 2, with one piece of evidence being that Apple chose to stick with Quanta Computer for production, rather than shifting manufacturing over to Foxconn, which builds the (much) higher volume iPhone.
Somewhere along the line, it seems that Apple got a whole lot more optimistic.

Nope, no Apple Watch for me. I recently sold my original Apple Watch. It got to the point where it was annoying, and I really don’t like wearing a watch. Those two facts outweighed any benefits. I know some people, especially athletes, disagree and have specific purposes in mind. For me, its just redundant.
Yes, ordered one last night. While the watch’s ability is limited, it is constantly useful – time, weather, fitness tracking, date, next up on schedule, Apple Pay, all nearly instantly.
The slow response of other apps was the biggest hitch, a faster CPU and assignment of more chores to the watch itself should be a noticeable improvement.
I have the Series One–and its grown on me. I need to see what apps utilize the onboard GPS in order to upgrade. I am an avid golfer, and would love to throw away my Garmin and have one watch that I wear for all purposes.
I caved this morning. The screen brightness, faster processor and better waterproofing is what sold me. Watch was always good for payments, step tracking and notifications. I’m hoping to take advantage of more of its functionality given the spec bump and coming release of watchOS 3.
Obviously the gps was to hit the huge market of runners (not to mention Nike version) but the crazy thing is Apple still doesn’t support Audiobooks on their watch. Even ones purchased from iBooks cannot be synced to the watch. I know so many runners that listen to audiobooks while running I feel like they completely missed the mark. Apparently it has something to do with DRM but I don’t fully understand it, its weird.
I ordered the Series 2 on line this morning BUT – although Apple say it will be available on the 16th my order conformation says delivery not until MID-OCTOBER! The option to pick up at local Apple Store was greyed-out. Not happy about pre-orders being delayed by over a month.
FYI: I ordered within the first 30 seconds when the store became available at 3:16am EST. My order confirmation is not showing an October delay like yours. Mine shows Sept 16th
I woke up at about 4:30am EST so ordered it then. Perhaps some colours have longer delays, I ordered the silver aluminium sport. I am wondering if it’s possible to go to my local store on the 16th, try to get one there, then if successful cancel my on line pre-order.
I think that is the case because I ordered a space grey sport at 5:30 and my order says it is delivering September 30-October 7
I ordered last night at about 12:12 am pdt. I should get it Sept. 16-18. Waited out for gps cause I run a lot. Can’t wait!!!
I just broke my Apple Watch Sport last week. I was really starting to push the waterproofness of it to see how far it could go (it goes really far). Well, while swimming 4 feet under water, I mistakenly rapped the screen against the bottom of the pool. I guess the water pressure + the impact was too much to handle. Screen stopped responding, then watch kept rebooting. I’ve been without my Apple Watch for about 5 days and now I realize how much I really miss it. It’s all the little things that add up to an experience that I didn’t realize made such a difference. So I’m investing in a Series-2 with SS/Sapphire screen. It should be fairly bullet proof, and I can swim with it without constantly checking to see if it’s still working. My sport had a few small scratches over time and nothing is worse than looking at a watch with a scratch in the glass.
Yes. Might wait for the Nike version. Nice strap on that one.
